Job Description
The mission of Lincoln Charter School is to facilitate the development of college‑ready individuals through emphasis on rigorous academics and our community expectations: honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, service and preparedness.
Bus stops are point‑to‑point (no house passenger stops).
Seeking part‑time substitute bus drivers for both our Denver and Lincolnton School locations. Hours may vary. Requirements for CDL license below.
Licensing Requirements
- Must hold a valid CDL license, not suspended, disqualified or revoked.
- No moving‑violation convictions beyond limits: one within the past 12 months; no more than three within the past 5 years; no DUI in the past 5 years; no more than one DUI ever; no license suspensions or revocations for moving violations within the past 5 years.
- Applicants who have been in NC less than five years must provide a copy of the driving record from the previous state.
- No convictions deemed disqualifying by federal CDL requirements.
- At least 21 years of age and at least 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle.
Medical & Physical
Must meet federal qualifications for being physically and mentally competent to operate a school bus.
May be required to submit a completed medical report before or after certification.
Some pre‑existing conditions may require a CDL physical every 12 months.
Drug Testing
Must pass a drug screen. Certain prescription medications are prohibited or conditionally allowed.
Training & Testing
School bus drivers must:
- Successfully complete the required three‑day school bus driver training class.
- Pass up to four knowledge tests with a score of 80 percent or better on each test.
- Successfully complete behind‑the‑wheel training with a driver education program specialist.
- Pass a skills test.
Fees: The school will pay all licensing fees.
Restrictions
Under North Carolina law, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles does not issue or renew a commercial driver license with a “P” or “S” endorsement to anyone required to register under sex offender and public protection registration programs.
Suspensions & Revocations
Commercial driver license holders must comply with the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act to maintain their CDL and school‑bus driver certification.
Sequence of Licensing
- Fill out employment application.
- Pass criminal background check.
- Pass CDL medical and pre‑employment physical.
- Attend NC bus driver training class and pass written tests.
- Obtain an NC CDL driver permit.
- Attend 3‑day driver on‑road training and pass pre‑trip and driving tests.
