Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this position is to safely operate Step Forward’s school bus or any other agency vehicle assigned to transport Head Start children, to and from school and children, teachers and volunteers on field trips. Observes federal, state, and city speed and safety regulations and Step Forward’s transportation operations policies and procedures on safety and service.
Essential Functions:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provides pick up and return bus transportation services for Head Start pre-school children, parents and staff at agency approved bus stops; adheres to prescribed agency service routes and safety rules; assists in safely securing children entering and exiting the bus and assist children with special needs as necessary; provides additional transportation during special events and determines the size and type of vehicle needed depending on the number of passengers; assists with deliveries throughout the agency as assigned.
Assists Bus Monitor with pre and post-trip daily inspections according to federal, state, local and agency regulations; receives two-way radio, route assignment, keys, clock, pre-trip form and driver observation card at the beginning of each shift; carefully exams the bus interior to make certain no children or forgotten personal items are left on the bus; cleans any waste items and ensures the vehicle is clean and returns bus, two-way radio and other work items at the end of the day to the bus depot.
Reports accidents and/or emergency conditions or situations to dispatcher via two-way radio: requests police or emergency services as needed; follows agency policies and procedures including assisting with accident report; assisting injured passengers by utilizing first aid supplies prior to medical personnel arriving and assisting passengers exit from the bus if necessary.
Performs routine maintenance, fuels the bus, cleans the interior and exterior of the bus and reports repairs needed to supervisor; completes accurate records of odometer readings, fuel and vehicle inspections.
Attends agency required departmental and agency wide meetings, trainings and workshops and maintains a clean driving record meeting all applicable state, local and federal regulations.in order to maintain Commercial Driver’s license.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in transportation as driver/delivery operatororany equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
