JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Bus Driver

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Begining Salary: $18.86 per hour

GENERAL SUMMARY

Safely operates a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations to transport students to and from school(s) facilities. Is responsible for maintaining discipline of students being transported. Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates a bus over a route designated and approved by the School District and the State Department of Education.
  • Operates equipment in accordance with all state laws and regulations.
  • Maintains discipline of students being transported, and reports misconduct to the principal and/or transportation administrators for appropriate disciplinary action using an incident report.
  • Maintains a clean appearance of equipment, and reports any vandalism or equipment failures to immediate supervisor.
  • Provides written reports of road hazards on assigned routes.
  • Coordinates route changes with students' parents.
  • Assigns students to seats and maintains an up-to-date status of students in the transportation office.
  • Attends safety meetings.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date daily records on mileage and time sheets.
  • Exhibits acceptable conduct as an employee in keeping with School Board policies.
  • Operates a two-way radio to maintain communications with schools and main office; operates a calculator in completing required forms; utilizes various supplies such as cleaning agents, office supplies, etc.
  • Maintains current required driver’s license and other operator certifications.
  • Administers general first aid when needed.
  • Coordinates special needs of students with parents, aides, teachers, and school administrators.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • High school graduate.
  • Certified bus driver and Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with an excellent motor vehicle driving record.
Knowledge

Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations, safety procedures, and bus operation requirements. Knowledge of certification and licenses, limitations and hazards, appearance maintenance, and appropriate reporting procedures for misbehavior, equipment failure, daily activity, mileage, and time records. Knowledge of emergency procedures and daily bus routes including school locations and landmarks.

Skills / Effort

Ability to operate a school bus in all weather and noise conditions, complete tasks safely and timely, apply independent judgment, communicate effectively with students, supervisors, co‑workers, and the public, maintain state certificate and commercial driver’s license, and handle emergency situations calmly and responsibly.

Working Conditions

Work primarily on a school bus, driving under varying weather, road, and temperature conditions, with exposure to heat, cold, rain, humidity, and poor road conditions. Requires constant attention, awareness, and stress tolerance. Physical demands include driving, operating controls, and maintaining equipment cleanliness. Routine local travel to and from school; no overnight travel.

Responsibility

No budgetary responsibility. Supervises students riding the bus.
