Job description

Title: Bus Driver

Location: Central Services Facility

Classification: Greenville Education Support Personnel Association Master Agreement 2023-2026

Reports to: Director of Transportation

Schedule: 6 hours per day, when school is in session

Salary: $18.31 - $25.99 per hour, based on relevant prior work experience

POSITION SUMMARY: The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: other duties may be assigned

  • Operate a school bus in a safe and professional manner while adhering to traffic laws and school district policies
  • Transport students along assigned routes, ensuring punctual pickup and drop off times
  • Maintain order and discipline on the bus to ensure a safe ride for all passengers
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, including checking brakes, tires, lights, and other essential systems
  • Report mechanical issues and schedule necessary maintenance or repairs
  • Keep the bus clean and free of hazards
  • Ensure students enter and exit the bus safely, assisting younger or disabled students as needed
  • Follow proper procedures at railroad crossings and school zones
  • Communicate behavioral expectations to students and report any disciplinary issues to school administrators
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage, and incidents
  • Commitment to regular and predictable attendance

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong awareness of road and traffic safety rules
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and staff
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and respond to emergencies appropriately
  • Ability to manage large groups of children and enforce rules fairly and consistently
  • Patient and flexible when working with students of different ages and abilities
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical exam and drug screening
  • Satisfactory background check

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements
  • Airbrake endorsement with no restrictions (or willingness to obtain)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must have the ability to climb in and out of the bus multiple times per day. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk to adjust mirrors, check blind spots, and secure students as needed. The employee will make frequent, repetitive movements of the legs and feet while operating pedals. Employees will use their hands to handle, control, grasp, move, and feel controls and tools. The employee is occasionally required to reach above head and shoulder level. Occasionally required to carry, lift, and move up to 50 pounds. The employee must have sufficient vision to operate a school bus and be capable of operating a vehicle in adverse weather conditions. In-person work is required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Communication: The employee must have clear speaking and sufficient hearing to communicate effectively and appropriately in person and on the telephone. Ability to write business correspondence in a professional manner. Ability to present information to small and large groups.
  • Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to use good judgment in making decisions.
  • Interpersonal: Maintain and encourage a safe environment for all students, staff, and the community. Effective organizational skills. Ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to be flexible in dealing with staff, students, parents, and the community. Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, dependability, honesty, and self-motivation while performing the duties of the position. Exhibits a positive image as a representative of the school district.
  • Mathematics: Ability to perform basic math computations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Environmental: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is exposed to infections at a greater risk than the average person. The employee may be required to be outdoors for a short period of time, and is therefore subject to varying weather conditions.
