Job summary

Canal Winchester School District is seeking a Bus Aide for Regular and/or Handicapped Students on a substitute basis. The role supports the Transportation Coordinator and Special Education Director to ensure safe student transportation.

Required are a high school diploma or GED and an Ohio Educational Aide permit, plus experience with children. You must be able to assist seated and handicapped students, de-escalate conflicts, and follow all safety and IEP-related procedures.

Qualifications

• Physical strength to monitor students and assist handicapped students.
• Ability to lift and/or assist handicapped students.
• Formal and/or in-service training related to transporting handicapped students.

Responsibilities

• Assists bus driver in supervising students on the bus and during entry/exit of handicapped students.
• Maintains control and discipline of students while the bus is in operation.
• Applies safety rules and regulations for transporting students, including IEP-specific items.
• Secures wheelchairs and seatbelts when necessary.
• Cooperates with the bus driver to whom the aide is assigned.
• Assist with evacuation procedures in emergencies.

Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Bus Aide for Regular and/or Handicapped Students

REPORTS TO: Transportation Coordinator and Special Education Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Must have an Ohio Educational Aide permit.
• Must have experience working with children.
• Must have the ability to positively interact with children and adults.
• Must possess physical strength and ability to move about a school bus to monitor students and to assist handicapped students.
• Must possess the physical capability to lift and/or manage handicapped students when necessary.
• Must possess or upgrade skills through formal and/or in-service training related to transporting handicapped students.
• Must possess or upgrade skills to be able to de-escalate conflict that could arise on a bus.

Job Goal:

To assist a bus driver to maintain a safe environment for all students riding on a school bus.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Applies school bus evacuation procedures in case of an emergency.
• To assist a bus driver in the supervision of students while these students are on the bus and for handicapped students, also when they enter and exit the bus.
• Maintains control and discipline of students if needed while the bus driver is driving the bus.
• Applies all safety rules and regulations for the transportation of students, including any items specific to a child’s individual education plan (IEP).
• If necessary, secures the wheelchairs and seatbelts of students
• Cooperates with, and is responsible to the bus driver on and bus the aide is assigned.

Additional Working Conditions:

1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.

2. Occasional interactions with unruly children.

Position Type: Substitute

Salary: $15.48 to $24.31 Per Hour
