Job summary

Remc 6 is seeking a Bus Aide to assist in the safe and pleasant transportation of children. The position requires being 18+, a high school diploma or GED, good health, and the ability to pass a TB test. The role involves helping children board and exit the bus, maintaining safety, and following district policies. It is a part-time position with a salary of $15.75 per hour and no benefits.

Qualifications

  • Reading, analyzing and interpreting safety rules, operating instructions, and procedures.
  • Basic math computations including rates, ratios, and percents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively before groups of students, parents, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Help children board the bus safely and assist teachers with departure.
  • Ensure the bus driver can operate safely by staying focused on surroundings.
  • Help children exit the bus and be placed with authorized individuals.
  • Retrieve fallen objects during the ride and assist with safety procedures.
  • Follow mandated child restraint device procedures and ensure proper seating.
  • Assist in safe evacuation of children in emergencies.
  • Report accidents or traffic violations to the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Maintain interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe condition.
  • Ensure no child is left unsupervised on the bus.
  • Interact effectively with students, parents, staff and the community.

Job description

The primary function of the Bus Aide is to assist in the safe and pleasant transportation of children.

Education/Experience/Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 or older;
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Good health, high moral character;
  • Ability to pass a TB test;
  • Must be composed and positive under stressful situations;
  • Must enjoy working with children;
  • Self starter who can work independently;
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule;
  • Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, community, or employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic math computations including rates, ratio, and percents using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, with staff and with the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals established by the Board of Education. Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Demonstrated ability to use good judgment in making decisions.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Maintain and encourage a safe environment for all students, staff, and the community. Effective organizational skills. Ability to work without direct supervision. Ability to be flexible in dealing with staff, students, parents, and the community.   • Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to hold, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with and be flexible in accommodating scheduled activities/events during their shift. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds, such as students. Must be able to open the emergency door on the bus. Occasionally the employee must use hand/grip strength to do manual tasks. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable Individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees, and occasionally on slippery services. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District (Board Policy 1400).

Report to/Evaluated by: Bus Driver; Transportation Supervisor

Supervisory Responsibility: Direct supervision of students.

Salary Range: $15.75 per hour; part-time; no benefits; non-union.

Position works as needed and scheduled.

  • Follow all established policies, practices, and procedures in terms of duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Help children board the bus safely, including helping teachers prepare for departure;
  • Assure that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the bus;
  • Help children safely get off the bus and into the custody of those individuals authorized to receive them;
  • Retrieve an fallen objects during the bus ride;
  • Follow and ensure mandated child restraint device procedures are followed, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained;
  • Assures the safe evacuation of children in an emergency situation;
  • Reports any accidents or traffic violations incurred by the bus driver to the Transportation Supervisor;
  • Attends all scheduled meetings and trainings as requested;
  • Assist in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition;
  • Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus;
  • Interact effectively with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.
