Job summary

Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) in Helena seeks a Bureau Chief to lead a team of about 13 FTE within the Public Health and Safety Division. You will report to the Division Administrator and oversee program operations, personnel, and governance to ensure compliant, efficient public health services for Montanans.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in public health or related field with coursework, training, and/or experience in public health.
• Five or more years of job-related experience in public health or related areas, including two years of management and supervisory experience.
• Alternative: Bachelor of Science in related medical/scientific field or public administration with seven years of progressively responsible public health experience, including at least two years in management or supervision.

Position Title

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Public Health and Safety Division in Helena.

As a Bureau Chief within the Public Health and Safety Division (PHS), you will report directly to the PHS Division Administrator and lead a team of proximately 13 FTE through subordinate section supervisors, managers, and direct supervision.

The position provides leadership, direction, and coordination for public health service programs dedicated to protecting and improving the health and safety of Montanans. Responsibilities include overseeing bureau personnel and ensuring the effective utilization of human resources in compliance with applicable employment laws, state policies, and collective bargaining agreements. The position also manages the Bureau’s policies, administrative systems, and resources to optimize funding and staffing, promote operational efficiency, ensure compliance with state requirements, and maintain uninterrupted program operations. In addition, the position establishes guidance and direction for division processes, standards, and governance to support consistent, effective, and accountable program administration.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

Master’s degree in public health or a master’s degree in health science-related field, or in public administration, or in a related field with coursework, training, and/or experience in public health.

Five or more years of job-related experience in public health or related areas, including two years of management and supervisory experience.

Alternate methods of obtaining necessary qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in a related medical, scientific field, or public administration with seven years of progressively responsible and related public health experience, including at least two years of management or supervisory experience.
