The Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is looking for a skilled, dependable, and motivated individual to join its team as a Buildings Worker. This is an exciting opportunity to play a hands-on role in maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that keeps one of the nation’s busiest transit systems running smoothly.

As a Buildings Worker, the role will perform a diverse range of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks across BART’s extensive network of facilities. The incumbent work will directly support stations, platforms, administrative buildings, and operational sites- helping ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for both employees and the public.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, field-based role and enjoys working across multiple building trades. The incumbent will take ownership of assignments from start to finish, applying your technical skills and judgment to assess conditions, troubleshoot issues, and implement effective solutions. The role calls for independence, initiative, and pride in delivering high-quality workmanship.

The most qualified candidate will demonstrate strong competencies beyond the minimum qualifications, supported by relevant work experience and clearly demonstrated throughout the selection process, including:

  • Ownership & Accountability – Demonstrates full ownership of field assignments, managing work from initial assessment through completion with minimal supervision.
  • Site Assessment & Practical Problem Solving – Effectively evaluates site conditions and determines efficient, practical approaches to repair and maintenance activities.
  • Proactive Issue Identification – Anticipates, identifies, and resolves facility issues early to prevent escalation and minimize impact.

Carpentry
  1. Buildsandrepairsstairs,fences,gates,decks,platforms,shedsandrelated;plan, designs and builds avarietyofcabinets, cupboardsand counter bases.
  2. Installsglass,framewallsand partitions; repairs and modifies furniture; measures, cuts, installs andrepairs carpeting.
  3. Hangs,framesandadjustsdoorsandwindowframes;hangssheetrock,tapesand textureswalls;installspaneling;installsandrepairssuspendedceilings,acousticaltiles and cement ceilings.
  4. Caulks seams, jointsand cracks; cuts, shapes, appliesand installslaminates, formica,plasticsandrelated materials.
  5. Constructs forms for sidewalks, walk-paths, bus pads, footings, foundations,concretepads &patios, and generalformwork as required.
  6. Constructswoodworkingandrepairsincludingbutnotlimitedtobuilding ladder andstairconstruction with platforms, partitions, scaffolding, barricades,crates andshippingworks, gazebos, decks,fences, sheds and buildingextensions.
  7. Operates and maintains woodshop machinery, table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, planers, shapers, routers, dowelingtools, chop saws, sanders, panel saws and general shop poweredtools.
Masonry
  1. Constructsforms,setsrebar, pours andfinishes concrete,aggregateandrelated paving.
  2. Installs,replacesandrepairslinoleum;laysout,measures,installs,repairs,groutsand sealsceramictile; repairs terrazzo flooring; installs hollowcable carryingfloors.
  3. Operatesjackhammer,ladder,backhoe,dumptruckandcementruck;measuresand levelsgradesfor concrete work; installand repair brick, cobblestoneandmasonry.
  4. Performs generalconcretework; compactssub-base,setsrebarandmesh,poursandfinishes concreteto specifiedfinish (exposed aggregate, broom, stampedand various coloredfinishes).
  5. Installs and repairs concrete retaining walls, parkingstructure andother Districtconcrete structures.
Plumbing
  1. Repairsandinstalls supplyand drainage pipe.
  2. Augersandclearspipes anddrains, installand repair sinks, toilets, drinkingfountainsandrelatedfixtures.
  3. Inspectsand repairs District plumbingsystems.
  4. Installs and repairs domestic hot and cold-water lines,hot waterheater, garbage disposals, expansion bladders, anti-backflow devices, hosebib(wallandfloor mount) hydrants.
  5. Installsandrepairsanglestops,flushometers,faucets,regulators,back-checks,meters,gauges, DMV’s andsewer linesboth stormand sanitation.
Metal
  1. Installsmetalstud,vinyl/clipandmodularwallsandpartitions;estimatesquantities of materialsrequired; determines and gathers necessarytools, suppliesand equipment;
  2. Performsgeneralmetalwork related to District property.
  3. Installs and repairs station service gates andfences, aluminum,stainless steel, wrought iron, cyclone,andother types offence andgate work; inspects, installsand repairsstationmetal wallsystems, with metalframework, andceilingsystems.
  4. Installs,inspects, adjustsandrepairsalldistrictdoorsandhardware, hydraulic door closers andarms,door steps,hinges, vents and louvers.
Other Duties
  1. Reads and interprets blueprintsand diagrams; may design, layout and diagram workto be performed.
  2. Discusseswork to be performed withForeworker, requesteror others.
  3. Calculatesandmeasures quantities, angles, lengths, sizes, etc.
  4. Loads and unloads material and equipment; drives District vehicles to job sites.
  5. Maintains stock materials, tools, equipment and inventory; maintains records of work performed and materials used.
Education

Possessionofahighschooldiploma,GED,orrecognizedequivalent.

Experience

Must possess one of the following, either: 1) Completion ofan apprenticeshipin anyof thesebuildingrelatedtrades:carpentry,plumbing and/or masonry; or 2) oneyearof journey level experience with tradesmencard in either carpentry, plumbing and/or masonry; or 3)aClassBGeneralBuildingsContractorLicense with 5-years active status, or 4)Class C Specialty Contractor License any of these trades: Framing and Rough Carpentry, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry, Concrete, Drywall, Flooring and Floor Covering, Plumbing, Roofing, Sheet Metal, Ceramic and Mosaic Tile, Concrete-Relates Services, Metal Products or Suspended Ceilings.

Other Requirements

Must possess a valid California driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, concrete, brick and masonry work, interior finishing and glass installation.
