Job summary

BART in Oakland is seeking a skilled Buildings Worker to maintain and improve facilities across its network. You will take ownership of assignments from start to finish, performing carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and metal work as needed.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is looking for a skilled, dependable, and motivated individual to join its team as a Buildings Worker. This is an exciting opportunity to play a hands-on role in maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that keeps one of the nation’s busiest transit systems running smoothly.

As a Buildings Worker, the role will perform a diverse range of maintenance, repair, and construction tasks across BART’s extensive network of facilities. The incumbent work will directly support stations, platforms, administrative buildings, and operational sites—helping ensure a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for both employees and the public.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic, field-based role and enjoys working across multiple building trades. The incumbent will take ownership of assignments from start to finish, applying your technical skills and judgment to assess conditions, troubleshoot issues, and implement effective solutions. Qualifications

Examples of Duties

Carpentry

• Builds and repairs stairs, fences, gates, decks and related; plan, designs and builds a variety of cabinets, cupboards and counter bases.
• Installs glass, frame walls and partitions; repairs and modifies furniture; measures, cuts, installs and repairs carpeting.
• Hangs, frames and adjusts doors and window frames; hangs sheetrock, tapes and textures walls; installs paneling; installs and repairs suspended ceilings, acoustical tiles and cement ceilings.
• Caulks seams, joints and cracks; cuts, shapes, applies and installs laminates, formica, plastics and related materials.
• Constructs forms for sidewalks, walk-paths, bus pads, footings, foundations, concrete pads & patios, and general formwork as required.
• Constructs wood working and repairs including but not limited to building ladder and stair construction with platforms, partitions, scaffolding, barricades, crates and shipping works, gazebos, decks, fences, sheds and building extensions.
• Operates and maintains wood shop machinery, table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, planers, shapers, routers, doweling tools, chop saws, sanders, panel saws and general shop powered tools.

Masonry

• Constructs forms, sets rebar, pours and finishes concrete, aggregate and related paving.
• Installs, replaces and repairs linoleum; lays out, measures, installs, repairs, grouts and seals ceramic tile; repairs terrazzo flooring; installs hollow cable carrying floors.
• Operates jackhammer, ladder, backhoe, dump truck and cement ruck; measures and levels grades for concrete work; install and repair brick, cobblestone and masonry.
• Performs general concrete work; compacts sub-base, sets rebar and mesh, pours and finishes concrete to specified finish (exposed aggregate, broom, stamped and various colored finishes).
• Installs and repairs concrete retaining walls, parking structure and other District concrete structures.

Plumbing

• Repairs and installs supply and drainage pipe.
• Augers and clears pipes and drains, install and repair sinks, toilets, drinking fountains and related fixtures.
• Inspects and repairs District plumbing systems.
• Installs and repairs domestic hot and cold-water lines, hot water heater, garbage disposals, expansion bladders, anti-backflow devices, hose bib (wall and floor mount) hydrants.
• Installs and repairs angle stops, flushometers, faucets, regulators, back-checks, meters, gauges, DMV’s and sewer lines both storm and sanitation.

Metal

• Installs metal stud, vinyl/clip and modular walls and partitions; estimates quantities of materials required; determines and gathers necessary tools, supplies and equipment;
• Performs general metal work related to District property.
• Installs and repairs station service gates and fences, aluminum, stainless steel, wrought iron, cyclone, and other types of fence and gate work; inspects, installs and repairs station metal wall systems, with metal framework, and ceiling systems.
• Installs, inspects, adjusts and repairs all district doors and hardware, hydraulic door closers and arms, door steps, hinges, vents and louvers.

Other Duties

• Reads and interprets blueprints and diagrams; may design, layout and diagram work to be performed.
• Discusses work to be performed with Foreworker, requester or others.
• Calculates and measures quantities, angles, lengths, sizes, etc.
• Loads and unloads material and equipment; drives District vehicles to job sites.
• Maintains stock materials, tools, equipment and inventory; maintains records of work performed and materials used.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.

Experience

Must possess one of the following, either: 1) Completion of an apprenticeship in any of these building related trades: carpentry, plumbing and/or masonry; or 2) one year of journey level experience with tradesmen card in either carpentry, plumbing and/or masonry; or 3) a Class B General Buildings Contractor License with 5-years active status, or 4) Class C Specialty Contractor License any of these trades: Framing and Rough Carpentry, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry, Concrete, Drywall, Flooring and Floor Covering, Plumbing, Roofing, Sheet Metal, Ceramic and Mosaic Tile, Concrete-Relates Services, Metal Products or Suspended Ceilings.

Other Requirements

Must possess a valid California driver license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge And Skills

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in carpentry, plumbing, concrete, brick and masonry work, interior finishing and glass installation.
• Methods and techniques of estimating materials and supply quantities.
• Mathematics for calculating and measuring distance, length, volume and angle.
• Use and maintenance of hand and power tools common to the trade.
• Safety practices and procedures.

Skill In

• Performing skilled carpentry, forming and cabinetry; installing and repairing plumbing, piping and plumbing-related fixtures.
• Installing, taping, texturing and finishing sheetrock and plaster wall surfaces.
• Using and maintaining hand and power tools common to the trade.
• Operating backhoes, loaders, jackhammers, cement mixers and dump trucks.
