Job summary

Holyoke Public Schools is seeking a Building Substitute for Peck Middle School in Holyoke, MA. The role supports the absent teacher, maintains classroom discipline, and ensures a safe, engaging learning environment throughout the day.

Starting immediately, the substitute will review materials, follow lesson plans, report incidents, and collaborate with staff to sustain student progress in an urban setting. A minimum of 60 college credits and 3 days/week availability are required.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a minimum of 60 college credits.
  • Must be willing to work a minimum of 3 days per week.
  • Communication skills with parents.
  • Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students.
  • Experience working in an urban setting, preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, preferred.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills.
  • Bilingual applicants (Spanish) strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Be flexible to meet the school administration’s needs and adapt to classroom needs.
  • Arrive 20 minutes early to review materials and prepare before students arrive.
  • Reports to the main office upon arrival.
  • Create and enforce structured discipline and classroom control.
  • Establish a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
  • Oversee student behavior in classroom and surrounding areas to ensure health, welfare, and safety.
  • Protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Honor teacher and school policies, procedures, and schedules.
  • Report all incidents of students, including injuries, to the appropriate authority immediately.
  • Implement lesson plans and instructions left by the absent teacher.
  • Utilize class time to continue student learning progress.
  • Engage all students in lessons through interactive teaching methods.
  • Organize students and classroom for effective instruction.
  • Complete a Substitute Teacher Report Form for the regular teacher at end of assignment.
  • Return instructional materials, equipment, and keys to proper location at day end.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s).

Job Description:
