Qualifications

Building Substitute Teacher

Reports To: School Principal

Department: Instruction

Grade Level: K–6

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the School Principal, the Building Substitute Teacher provides consistent instructional and classroom support when regularly assigned teachers or staff members are absent. The Building Substitute follows established lesson plans, maintains a safe and productive learning environment, supports schoolwide expectations, and helps ensure continuity of instruction for students in grades K–6.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Reports to the school building each scheduled workday and remains available to cover classroom or student-support assignments as needed.
  • Provides classroom instruction during teacher absences using the lesson plans, curriculum materials, and instructional resources provided.
  • Maintains established classroom routines, procedures, schedules, and behavioral expectations.
  • Creates a safe, inclusive, respectful, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Communicates learning objectives and provides clear directions for assignments and classroom activities.
  • Supports students individually and in small groups while maintaining appropriate expectations for learning and behavior.
  • Uses effective classroom-management strategies and follows the schoolwide behavior-management system.
  • Redirects student behavior calmly and consistently and requests additional support according to established procedures.
  • Implements accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs, 504 Plans, or English Learner plans as directed.
  • Supervises students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, transitions, field trips, and other school activities as assigned.
  • Takes attendance and maintains accurate records of assignments completed, student behavior, and other important information.
  • Provides the returning teacher with a clear summary of the day, including completed work, student progress, concerns, and incidents.
  • Protects the confidentiality of student, family, and staff information.
  • Uses classroom technology, educational applications, and learning-management systems as required.
  • Collaborates professionally with teachers, administrators, classroom assistants, interventionists, and support staff.
  • Follows all school safety procedures, emergency protocols, and student supervision requirements.
  • Participates in staff meetings, professional development, training, and school improvement activities as assigned.
  • Upholds school policies, professional expectations, and the educational mission of the school.
Additional Duties
  • Provides coverage for classroom assistants, intervention groups, lunch or recess duties, and other instructional or operational needs when classroom coverage is not required.
  • Assists with testing, school events, field trips, arrival, dismissal, and other student activities as assigned.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Principal or designee in support of school operations and student learning.

  • Proficiency with educational technology and classroom learning platforms.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Valid Indiana substitute teaching permit or other appropriate state authorization required or must be obtained within the school’s required timeframe.
  • Previous experience working with school-aged children preferred.
  • Previous substitute teaching, classroom-management, childcare, tutoring, or youth-service experience preferred.
  • Must meet all school, state, and federal employment requirements, including required background checks.
  • Willingness to complete required safety, classroom-management, confidentiality, and professional-development training.
