Job summary

The Land Use Services Department of San Bernardino County is seeking Building and Safety Engineers who will review and evaluate building plans to ensure compliance with California Building Standards Codes, County ordinances, and related regulations for new construction, tenant improvements, and modifications. Engineers I-III provide guidance to architects and contractors, prepare reports and recommendations, and must meet education and certification requirements (EIT/FE for II; P.E.

for III).

Qualifications

• Forty-Five semester units in civil/land use/structural/environmental engineering with 35 upper-division units.
• Engineer II requires EIT or FE certification and 2 years of related experience, with coursework list.
• Engineer I requires 45 semester units in specified field and 1 year of professional experience.
• ABET-accredited degree is highly desirable for senior levels.

Responsibilities

• Review and analyze building plans, structural calculations, specifications and related documents for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
• Ensure compliance with California Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Green Building, Energy Codes and County policies.

Job description

The Land Use Services Department is seeking knowledgeable and detail-oriented Building and Safety Engineerswhounder general direction, review and evaluate building construction plans and related documents to ensure compliance with applicable California Building Standards Codes, County ordinances, and other state and local regulations.

Building and Safety Engineers play a critical role in safeguarding public health and safety by ensuring that new construction, tenant improvements, and structural modifications meet current building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, energy, and accessibility standards.

Key responsibilities include:

• Review and analyze building plans, structural calculations, specifications, and related documents for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
• Ensure compliance with the California Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Green Building, Energy Codes, as well as San Bernardino County ordinances and policies.
• Provide technical guidance to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners regarding plan requirements and corrections.

ENGINEER I- Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Forty-Five (45) semester (68 quarter) units in civil, land use, structural,environmental, or a closely related field of engineering of which thirty-five (35) semester units must beupper division.

One year of professional experience working in land use, civil, environmental, or a closely related field of engineering.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification issued by the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists OR Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certification issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) may substitute for the upper division component; candidates must still meet overall unit requirement as specified above. (45 semester/68 quarter units)

Bachelor's degree in land use, civil, environmental, or a closely related field of engineering OR 4 years of experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician in San Bernardino County may substitute for one year of the required engineer experience.

ENGINEER II- Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

Candidates must possess Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification issued by the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists OR Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certification issued by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Two years of professional experience working in land use, civil, environmental, or a closely related field of engineering.

License	Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil Engineer with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
Education	Forty-Five semester (68 quarter) units in civil engineering or a closely related field. Candidates must provide a list of completed coursework.
Experience	Three (3) years ofprofessional experience working in land use, civil, environmental, or a closely related field of engineering.
Substitution for Experience	Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field OR four (4) years of experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician in San Bernardino County may substitute for one year of the required engineer experience.

Note: Candidates must provide a list of transcripts unless the candidates possess a Bachelor's degree in a qualifying area.All documents should be uploaded upon completion of the application. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and analytical professional with strong technical expertise in building codes and plan review. They will demonstrate sound engineering judgment, attention to detail, and a commitment to public safety and service excellence. A Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited school inland use, civil, environmental, or a closely related field of engineering is highly desirable.
