Job Summary
The Building and Refrigeration Maintenance Supervisor is primarily responsible for overseeing the ammonia/refrigeration system for the plant. Another key responsibility is supervising and executing all aspects of the building and grounds maintenance with customers, suppliers, local and corporate-wide Maker’s Pride employees and the manufacturing staff. The incumbent will train and mentor members of the Building and Grounds Maintenance department. This position exists to ensure the coordination of building space allocation, layout, and operational programs such as preventative and corrective maintenance, safety, and compliance. This position reports to the Plant Maintenance Manager and supervises a team of 4 to 5 Building and Grounds Maintenance Technicians.
Job Duties
- Refrigeration Systems Management
- Lead the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of ammonia-based refrigeration systems.
- Ensure compliance with PSM (Process Safety Management) standards, regulations, and safety protocols related to ammonia refrigeration. Make us Audit ready site.
- Perform system diagnostics and resolve refrigeration system issues proactively to prevent downtime.
- Oversee routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs of all refrigeration equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Utility Systems Management
- Supervise and ensure the efficient operation of key utility systems, including electrical, natural gas, compressed air, water (including hot water), sewer, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide and fire system.
- Ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all utility systems, addressing any failures or inefficiencies promptly.
- Work closely with maintenance and engineering teams to implement upgrades or modifications to utility systems.
- Maintain records of utility system inspections, repairs, and upgrades, ensuring compliance with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
- Leadership & Team Supervision
- Lead and manage a team of maintenance personnel, providing direction, coaching, and development opportunities.
- Assign tasks, monitor work progress, and provide guidance to ensure work is completed on time and in compliance with safety and operational standards.
- Ensure team members are trained in the latest safety procedures and operational techniques including system restart after Power Outage and support the team remotely.
- Vendor And Contractor Relations
- Build and maintain constructive relationships with contractors, vendors, and service providers.
- Coordinate and manage contractor services, including scheduling, oversight, and quality control of work performed.
- Ensure contractors and vendors adhere to safety, quality, and operational standards while on site.
- Evaluate Vendors and Contractors, annually.
- Proactive Maintenance & Equipment Upgrades
- Implement a proactive maintenance schedule for refrigeration and utility systems, minimizing downtime and ensuring system reliability.
- Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades and process improvements to enhance system efficiency and reduce operational costs.
- Work with management to secure necessary resources for equipment upgrades and capital improvements.
- Respond to Building and System related emergencies.
- Safety & Compliance
- Maintain strict adherence to OSHA, EPA, and local regulatory standards related to refrigeration and utility systems.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections, ensuring the facility complies with all safety protocols.
- Lead and participate in safety meetings and emergency response drills as necessary.
- Ensure proper documentation of safety measures, inspections, and compliance records.
- Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain and update all operational, safety, and compliance documentation for refrigeration and utility systems.
- Prepare regular reports on system performance, maintenance activities, and issues for management review.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and expenditures.
Required Skills & Competencies
Skill in:
- Demonstrated proficiency in a multi-craft maintenance role and continuous improvement is required.
Technical Skills
- Extensive knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems, HVAC, and other facility utility systems (electrical, natural gas, compressed air, water, etc.).
- Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and standards related to ammonia systems and utilities.
- Familiarity with automated monitoring and control systems for utilities.
Soft Skills
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.

Proficiency In
- MS Office applications: Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams
- EAM software (Allen Bradley, Studio 5000, Factory Talk, or similar)
Minimum Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in refrigeration environment.
- Five years of lead or two years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing maintenance environment; food industry preferred.
- Experience in general building and utility maintenance tasks.
- Hands-on experience in refrigeration maintenance and certification of Ammonia Operator Refrigeration Level 1 or higher.
- Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric principles.
- Understanding of 3-phase electrical systems, motor controls, and troubleshooting AC & DC drives.
- Ability to respond to off-shift needs and emergencies.
- Excellent communication, conflict management, decision-making, and organizational skills.
- Strong leadership and self-confidence.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb, lift up to 50 lbs, push/pull up to 2600 lbs with assistance, and work in various physical conditions.
- Repetitive reaching, bending, stooping, and working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Work in high and variable temperature environments, including wet and humid areas.
Work Environment
- Refrigerated/frozen facility with standard temperatures and variable conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, machinery, and temperature fluctuations.
- Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and vibration.
Sponsorship for work authorization is not available. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the location.
Pay range: $66,813 - $100,219/year, depending on location, experience, and skills. Benefits include health, dental, 401k, wellness, and potential annual incentive.
