Job summary

SAFEbuilt is seeking a part-time Building Official in Berkeley, MO. You will ensure code compliance, review plans, inspect sites, and coordinate with clients. This role requires ICC Building Official and Plans Examiner certifications and experience in building departments.

You will supervise staff as needed, attend meetings, and deliver excellent customer service. Strong communication and MS Office skills are essential; knowledge of local codes is critical.

Qualifications

• ICC Building Official certification required and ICC Plans Examiner certification required.
• Experience with inspection and plan review for commercial and residential structures.
• Strong knowledge of local building code regulations, policies and procedures.
• Proven ability to manage client relations and building department teams.
• Proficiency in MS Office and excellent verbal/written communication.

Responsibilities

• Meet state and local code compliance and reporting requirements.
• Apply building codes and procedures to daily building department functions.
• Serve as primary client liaison and deliver high level customer service.
• Attend department and community meetings as required by the client.
• Perform plan reviews for commercial and residential projects; provide inspection support as needed.

Job Requirements

• Responsible for meeting all state and locally mandated code compliance and reporting requirements.
• Apply knowledge of building codes, policies, and procedures to the day-to-day functions of the building department.
• Serve as the primary liaison with our clients in this area and is responsible for ensuring that we deliver the highest level of customer service
• Responsible for attending department and community meetings as required by the client.
• Perform some plan reviews both commercial and residential in all trades.
• Perform inspection support as needed.
• Supervise building department staff.

Skills/Knowledge

• Be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of local building code regulations, policies and procedures
• Have solid computer skills and experience using MS Office programs
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Exercise initiative and display independent judgment
• Be self-directed and self-motivated

Education/Experience

• ICC Building Official certification required
• ICC Plans Examiner certification required
• ICC Inspector certifications in multiple trades preferred
• Client and team management experience in a building department setting preferred

Physical Requirements

Mobility & Movement

• Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, or kneeling to conduct inspections.
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, or unfinished stairways to access roofs, attics, crawl spaces, and other elevated or confined areas.
• Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 25–50 pounds (e.g., inspection tools, plans, or small equipment).

Vision & Hearing

• Visual acuity sufficient to read construction plans, technical documents, and observe construction details.
• Ability to detect safety hazards and defects through visual and auditory inspection.
• Hearing sufficient to communicate with contractors, workers, and the public in noisy environments.

Manual Dexterity

• Use of hands and fingers to handle tools, operate inspection equipment, and use computers/tablets for reporting.

Work Environment

• Work performed in both office and field settings.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and construction site environments (noise, dust, uneven terrain).
• Frequent driving between inspection sites and company locations within a region.
