Job summary

SAFEbuilt is seeking a Building Official to join our Ketchum, ID team. The role emphasizes ensuring code compliance and leading the local building department, with relocation assistance provided to the right candidate.

You will review plans, perform inspections for commercial and residential projects, attend client meetings, and supervise department staff while delivering exceptional customer service to our clients and communities.

Qualifications

• ICC Building Official Certification required.
• ICC Residential and Commercial Building Inspector Certifications required.
• Experience supervising building department staff required.
• Experience performing plan reviews for commercial and residential structures required.
• Strong knowledge of local building code regulations, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Meet all state and locally mandated code compliance and reporting requirements.
• Apply knowledge of building codes, policies, and procedures to day-to-day building department functions.
• Serve as primary liaison with clients and ensure high level of customer service.
• Attend department and community meetings as required by the client.
• Perform plan reviews for both commercial and residential in all trades.
• Provide inspection support as needed.
• Supervise building department staff.

Job Requirements

• Responsible for meeting all state and locally mandated code compliance and reporting requirements.
• Apply knowledge of building codes, policies, and procedures to the day-to-day functions of the building department.
• Serve as the primary liaison with our clients in this area and is responsible for ensuring that we deliver the highest level of customer service
• Responsible for attending department and community meetings as required by the client.
• Perform some plan reviews both commercial and residential in all trades.
• Perform inspection support as needed.
• Supervise building department staff.

Skills/Knowledge

• Be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of local building code regulations, policies and procedures
• Client and team management experience in a building department setting
• Have solid computer skills and experience using MS Office programs
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Exercise initiative and display independent judgment
• Be self-directed and self-motivated

Education/Certification/Experience

• ICC Building Official Certification required
• ICC Residential and Commercial Building Inspector Certifications required
• ICC Building Plans Examiner Certification preferred
• ICC Building Code Specialist Certification preferred
• ICC Commercial Mechanical Inspector Certification preferred
• Inspection and plan review experience for commercial and residential structures required
• Experience supervising building department staff required

Physical Requirements

Mobility & Movement:

• Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, or kneeling to conduct inspections.
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, or unfinished stairways to access roofs, attics, crawl spaces, and other elevated or confined areas.
• Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 25–50 pounds (e.g., inspection tools, plans, or small equipment).

Vision & Hearing

• Visual acuity sufficient to read construction plans, technical documents, and observe construction details.
• Ability to detect safety hazards and defects through visual and auditory inspection.
• Hearing sufficient to communicate with contractors, workers, and the public in noisy environments.

Manual Dexterity

• Use of hands and fingers to handle tools, operate inspection equipment, and use computers/tablets for reporting.

Work Environment

• Work performed in both office and field settings.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and construction site environments (noise, dust, uneven terrain).
• Frequent driving between inspection sites and company locations within a region.
