County of Salem in Salem, NJ is seeking a dedicated Custodian/Maintenance Worker to clean, maintain, and improve county buildings, grounds, and facilities.

The role covers routine custodial duties, minor repairs across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and safe operation of cleaning equipment; requires ability to lift, work from ladders, and follow instructions.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of custodial procedures, building maintenance methods, tools, materials, equipment, and safety practices.
• Ability to perform routine building maintenance and minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, masonry).
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment, hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects and work from ladders or scaffolds when required.

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of a supervisory official, performs a variety of custodial, maintenance, and repair duties to clean, maintain, and improve county buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds. Responsibilities include routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and assisting with building systems and general maintenance projects. Performs related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

• Cleans and maintains offices, restrooms, common areas, buildings, and grounds to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
• Performs routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, floor care, window cleaning, and waste removal.
• Performs routine maintenance and repair work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, and other building systems.
• Assists with minor repairs, preventative maintenance, and general upkeep of buildings, equipment, and facilities.
• Operates and maintains cleaning equipment, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.
• Assists skilled trades personnel with maintenance and repair projects.
• Moves furniture, equipment, supplies, and other materials as needed; may work from ladders or scaffolds and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Performs seasonal grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, leaf removal, snow removal, and ice control.
• Maintains supplies, equipment, records, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Utilizes agency recordkeeping and information systems as required.

LICENSE:

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of custodial procedures, building maintenance methods, tools, materials, equipment, and safety practices.
• Ability to perform routine building maintenance, custodial work, and minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, masonry, and related trades.
• Ability to safely operate cleaning equipment, hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to lift and move moderately heavy objects, perform physically demanding work, and work from ladders or scaffolds when required.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, maintain simple records, and utilize agency information systems.
• Ability to work independently and effectively with others while maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.

RATE

RATE: $22.67 per hour; 40 hours per week, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
