Job summary

Gila County Community College seeks a skilled trades technician to perform a variety of maintenance tasks across trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. You will read blueprints, estimate materials, and ensure compliance with safety codes while supporting remodeling and repair of county facilities.

The role requires four years of building or grounds maintenance experience, plus a valid driver's license; locksmith certification within 12 months is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED, and four (4) years building or grounds maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the job.
• Ability to obtain Department of Corrections Clearance if assigned to supervise inmate worker activities.
• Ability to acquire Locksmith Certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Perform building maintenance and minor remodeling tasks involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical work; operate hand and power tools and follow safety practices.
• Perform maintenance checks, service, and repairs on HVAC units, water heaters, small motors, fans, pumps, compressors, and similar items; service and install refrigeration systems.
• Interpret construction drawings, plans and blueprints; prepare material and labor estimates for building maintenance projects.
• Service, replace, repair and install electrical systems, conduit, switches, generators, control panels, sensors, and miscellaneous electrical repairs; troubleshoot electrical problems; manage circuits; maintain security systems.
• Make interior repairs including locks, faucets and toilets; clear clogged drains and sewer lines.
• Make exterior repairs including patching roofs/walls/ceilings, weatherproofing, repairing steps, concrete walkways, railing and fences.
• Coordinate with County employees and building inspectors, local/state authorities, vendors on maintenance activities.
• Utilize hand tools and equipment to complete assignments; follow safety procedures and report hazards.

Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled trades work involving mechanical, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC systems related to remodeling, maintenance, and repair of County buildings, building equipment and systems and is responsible for completion of assigned tasks; assures compliance with applicable State and Local building and safety codes and standards. Performs landscaping and housekeeping duties.

• Performs building maintenance and minor remodeling tasks involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical work; operates hand and power tools and ensures compliance with safety operations and safety policies.

Knowledge Required

Knowledge of institutional equipment and systems, including heating, air conditioning and ventilation and their maintenance. Cleaning procedures, practices, supplies and equipment; occupational safety hazards; knowledge of commercial kitchen and laundry equipment maintenance; knowledge of building maintenance operations and activities; regulations pertaining to facility/detention facility building and fire codes, safety precautions, plan drawings, blue prints; knowledge of all aspects of building maintenance and repair heating, cooling, ventilation, electrical, plumbing, boiler operation; carpentry; painting; landscaping; security systems and monitors; inmate phone system. Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. This position occasionally requires welding gloves, reflective road vest, rubber gloves; constantly requires safety foot wear; occasionally requires hearing protection devices and hard hat.
