Job summary

Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a skilled trades technician to respond to maintenance issues, perform preventative tasks, and help minimize disruptions across campus facilities.

You will work within Auxiliary Services, handling building systems such as plumbing, carpentry, doors, drywall, painting and related repairs, while coordinating with supervisors and using the Work Order system to manage tasks.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED; 2 years of related experience.
• Knowledge of skilled trades and ability to operate basic tools.
• Ability to learn plumbing, painting, drywall, flooring and low voltage electrical basics.
• Good math, written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide skilled trade services and general repairs for building maintenance issues.
• Perform preventative maintenance on various building systems and respond to urgent matters.
• Assist supervisor with coordinating maintenance projects, planning and scheduling.
• Create, update and close out work orders in the Work Order system; order supplies.
• Support contract/vendor oversight and communications; ensure safety and compliance.

Position HighlightsResponds to maintenance issues and supports RIT’s daily operations through the work order system and mobile communications. Performs and improves planned preventative maintenance tasks on building systems, while providing immediate responses to urgent issues and implementing corrective actions to minimize disruptions.Participate in after-hours maintenance response rotation.Auxiliary ServicesComprised of six departments, RIT Auxiliary Services impacts the recruitment and retention of future and current students by providing quality products, services, and memorable experiences. Skilled employees with diverse expertise, strong community partnerships, and innovative solutions prime us for legendary service that promotes student success and drives financial growth for the University.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesProvides skilled trade services and performs general repairs to address building maintenance issues (including, but not limited to plumbing, carpentry, doors and hardware, painting, drywall repair, windows and screens, roofing, masonry, hang banners, tile work, furniture repair, steam and natural gas piping, and window shade installation and repair)Assesses problems, considers time and cost required, and takes the best course of action (in-house or contract) to complete the repairsInspects and performs preventative maintenance on multiple building systems including plumbing, doors and hardware, glazing, roofing, furniture, indoor and outdoor fountains, storm water collection/storage and pumping/filtering systems, swimming pool operations, pumps, and filtersAssists supervisor in the coordination of maintenance projects, including but not limited to planning, scheduling, and contract/vendor oversight and communicationProvides immediate response to building maintenance related matters of urgency, such as major water leaks, broken/hanging glass, malfunctioning elevators, natural gas odor, electrical hazards, downed outdoor light poles, removal of wildlife, or other issues that impact the physical safety of the RIT community. Contains the situation, determines and implements corrective/restorative actions, provides direction to supporting departments, and notifies appropriate personnelUtilizes the Work Order system to create, update, and close out work orders.
