Job summary

The City of Mebane is seeking a maintenance worker to coordinate contracted custodial services for City buildings and inspect facilities for preventive or unscheduled maintenance. You will stock supplies, perform skilled manual labor, and assist with grounds maintenance while working under supervision.

Responsibilities include reading and following directions, maintaining maintenance logs, and communicating with staff and the public.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED with building maintenance experience or equivalent.

Job description

General Statement of Duties

This position provides support in coordinating contracted custodial services of City buildings, inspecting City facilities for preventive or unscheduled maintenance, stocking supplies, and performing a variety of skilled manual labor on city structures, facilities, and grounds.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Employees in this class perform skilled manual work to provide safe and attractive structures, facilities, and grounds for city residents. Work includes general work in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, security systems, roofing, janitorial services, heating and ventilation systems, and other trades as needed. Additionally, an employee in this class is tasked with inspecting facilities for broken, malfunctioning, or deteriorating areas or equipment, operating a city truck, loading and unloading supplies, and performing other labor-intensive tasks. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Public Works Building Maintenance Coordinator or crew leader. Work is evaluated for safety, operation, and the overall appearance of city structures, and is checked daily through visual inspections and citizen feedback.

  • Ability to identify and report maintenance needs or safety issues to a lead worker or supervisor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and city staff while demonstrating courtesy and tact.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time and be available to work overtime and weekends if required.
  • Ability to work as a member of a work crew or team on assignments.
  • General knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Ability to respond to work for emergencies or in support of other personnel as required.
Physical Requirements

Work in this class is considered medium to heavy work requiring exertion of more than 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned as well as recognize and apply safety standards to work performed. Employees must have the stamina to engage in strenuous physical work for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions

Employees are primarily subject to outside environmental conditions including extreme cold and heat as well as noise levels requiring workers requiring the wearing of protective gear. Employees are subject to physical workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rain and snow, and potential exposure to chemicals as well as atmospheric conditions including fumes, odors, dust, dirt, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Employee may work in close quarters, crawl space, shafts, manholes, small enclosures, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED, with experience in building maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position.

Special Requirement
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License – Class C without restrictions
  • May be required to obtain an NC Commercial Driver's License (Class B)
  • Employees in this class must be capable of working regular work hours and be available to work weekends or holidays, and available for call‑in duty in emergencies.
