Job summary

Craven County Government is seeking a skilled maintenance worker to perform journeyman duties across carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration and control systems. Duties include repairing fixtures, maintaining building systems, reading blueprints and supervising staff as needed.

Ideal candidates have high school completion, substantial trade experience and relevant certifications, plus a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Perform journeyman level skilled maintenance and repair work across carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics and control systems.
• Carry out general carpentry for repairs or alterations to floors, roofs, doors and windows.
• Replace faulty electrical components, hang sheetrock and finish walls, sand and paint.
• Repair plumbing fixtures, analyze and fix defects in plumbing systems, and repair leaks.
• Maintain HVAC, refrigeration, and environmental control systems; service CCTV and access control equipment.
• Supervise semi-skilled or unskilled workers and ensure safe, efficient operations.

Job description

Essential Functions

• Perform journeyman level skilled maintenance and repair work in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, and environmental control systems.
• Perform general carpentry work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, and other wooden articles.
• Replace faulty bulbs, switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, ballasts, control transformers, sensors and other electrical components.
• Hang sheetrock, sand, paint or stain walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other articles.
• Repair water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; analyze defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems; repair leaks by replacing valves, fittings or sections in line, or installing replacement fixtures.
• Repair small areas of concrete, brick, stone and asphalt. Perform general maintenance on HVAC systems, ice makers, coolers and freezers.
• Perform preventative maintenance and general repair of pneumatic control systems and hydraulics.
• Perform general maintenance on fire control, detection and suppression systems. Repair, replace and maintain CCTV camera and access control equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school. Considerable experience in construction or building maintenance trades, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Certification or licenses in at least one of the following fields: carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, masonry, HVAC, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics and environmental control systems trades. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.

After‑hours work or emergency work may affect schedule as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge and experience of the procedures, materials and equipment related to the maintenance trades listed above.
• Substantial knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the maintenance trades.
• Substantial knowledge of basic grounds‑keeping practices and procedures.
• Skill with a variety of hand and power tools necessary for mechanical, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and building repair/ maintenance work.
• Knowledge and experience with personal computers and a thorough understanding of computer interactions related to access control, CCTV, security, fire control and environmental management systems.
• Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
• Ability to operate personal computers and various software programs that control or operate different building management systems.
• Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
• Ability to supervise the work of semi‑skilled and unskilled workers.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Additional Information

• May be required to serve during times of disaster.
• May supervise or provide lead‑worker duties for a small crew on an assigned task.
• Purchase various maintenance supplies as needed.
• May perform landscaping duties during special circumstances and/or assist the Grounds Maintenance Department with duties such as mowing, edging, mulching, tree removal, snow or debris removal, etc. Perform related work as required.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to perform basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Must have visual acuity to operate hand and power tools, perform visual inspections involving small objects, use measurement devices and assemble or fabricate parts and equipment, and operate trucks and medium to heavy equipment.
