Job summary

University of Missouri-Kansas City is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems across UMKC campuses. The role involves repairing building equipment, testing life-safety systems, and coordinating parts for repairs.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance on HVAC systems from single rooms to entire buildings.
• Repair and maintain building accessories and equipment such as tables, chairs, and appliances.
• Repair and maintain plumbing systems including water softeners, restrooms, and water coolers.
• Test and maintain emergency and life-safety equipment (emergency lights, fire alarm systems).
• Locate parts and prepare purchase requests; advise on equipment purchases for consistency.
• Clean up work areas and restore to original state; support room turnover as needed.
• Operate and store all tools safely and observe safety requirements.

Job Location

Kansas City – UMKC (Volker and Health Sciences Campuses)

Shift

7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday

Key Responsibilities

• Complete preventative maintenance on heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems including single‑room units up to complete building systems.
• Repair and maintain building accessories and equipment, such as tables, chairs, residential furniture, gas, and electrical appliances.
• Repair and maintain plumbing systems for water softeners, restroom facilities, water coolers, etc.; open sewers/drains; replace faucets.
• Complete preventative maintenance and test emergency and life‑safety equipment in all buildings (emergency lights, fire alarm systems, sprinkler lines).
• Locate parts and prepare requests for purchase; provide input on recommended equipment purchases for consistency in maintenance and repair.
• Clean area upon completion; return materials and equipment and restore area to original state.
• Help in the “room turn” process throughout the year when needed.
• Clean, maintain, safely operate, and properly store all tools and equipment.
• Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent; demonstrated skills may offset requirements and a minimum of four years of experience in general building maintenance, including heating/air conditioning, electrical, water treatment, and plumbing.
• Knowledge and skill in the maintenance and use of tools, equipment, and materials used for general building maintenance.
• Manual dexterity and physical coordination.
• Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Compensation

Hourly: $24.00 – $25.00

Hiring incentive: $1,500.00 (eligible for $1,500 hiring incentive).

Union Eligibility

• Be currently employed in union‑eligible position under Local 955.
• Meet the minimum qualifications for the vacancy.
