Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain HVAC systems including hot water and steam heating and chilled water systems; balance air flow with testing equipment.
  • Install and change bearings, shafts, belts, filters; perform sheet‑metal work and duct/diffuser installation; operate and maintain chillers.
  • Maintain pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control systems; document preventive maintenance.
  • Assist with HVAC repairs, including floods caused by broken equipment.
  • Locate parts and prepare purchase requests; advise on equipment purchases for consistency.
  • Clean area after completion and store tools properly; enforce safety requirements.

Job description

As a UMKC employee within the MTS HVAC position, you’ll belong to an engaged, diverse community and will get to interact with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds daily. This job offers a dynamic environment across many buildings on the Volker campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, and maintain HVAC systems, including hot water and steam heating systems and chilled water cooling systems. Use testing equipment to check controls and balance air flow.
  • Install and change bearings, shafts, belts, and filters; perform sheet‑metal work and duct and diffuser installation. Operate and maintain centrifugal chillers and steam absorption chillers.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on pneumatic, electrical, and electronic control systems and prepare required documentation for preventive maintenance program.
  • Assist with HVAC repairs, including floods caused by broken equipment as needed.
  • Locate parts and prepare purchase requests; provide input on recommended equipment purchases to maintain consistency.
  • Clean area upon completion, restore it to its original state, and properly store all tools and equipment.
  • Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent; five (5) years of actual work experience and training in the trade, including apprenticeship or vocational training.
  • Knowledge and skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment, and materials for general building maintenance.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Shift
  • 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional nights and weekends may be required as needed.
Salary

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $28.00 to $33.00 hourly. This position is eligible for a $1,500 hiring incentive. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including education, skills, experience, and organizational needs.
