City of Berkeley seeks a Building Maintenance Mechanic to maintain and repair City buildings and facilities. You will perform plumbing, carpentry, remodeling, painting and related craft duties across Public Works sites.
Typical tasks include installing piping, fixing lavatories and HVAC units, preparing sketches, and using hand and power tools. A valid CA driver’s license is required and exam steps will be conducted as part of the process.
The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Building Maintenance Mechanic! The current vacancy is within the Public Works Department. In this role, you will perform plumbing, carpentry, remodeling, painting, and a variety of other craft or building trades through the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities.
Typical duties include installing and repairing piping, lavatory fixtures and HVAC units; preparing sketches for construction and modifications; and operating a variety of hand, power and shop tools.
The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in the Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Department or Berkeley Public Library.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and four (4) years experience in commercial building maintenance work, which includes substantial carpentry and plumbing duties; or completion of a state approved construction or building trade apprenticeship program. Possession of HVAC or Playground Safety Inspector certificate is highly desirable.
Other requirements include possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Candidates must also possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds; willingness to work evening and weekend shifts; willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions; and willingness to work with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances.

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews slated tentatively for the week of October 26, 2026.
