JUNIOR BUILDING CUSTODIAN
ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND SMALL BUILDINGS
Junior Building Custodian performs routine building cleaning tasks and does related work as required.
Duties – This is repetitive, manual work, requiring efficient performance of simple building cleaning and maintenance duties. An employee in this Class may also be responsible for the security of a building or a section of a building. A Junior Building Custodian works under general supervision on routine recurring assignments, receiving specific instructions on each new or unusual assignment. The work is occasionally reviewed by inspection and is performed under the direction of a Class A Building Custodian, Senior Building Custodian or other supervisor.
Example of Duties – Sweeps and mops floors; scrubs walls, bathrooms and stairs; washes windows and polishes furniture; dusts woodwork, furniture and other articles; cleans chalk trays; removes ice and snow from walkways; maintains heating equipment by cleaning and changing filters; maintains security of the building; maintains swimming pool area, checking water and adding chemicals, and backwashing filters (Jr. High only); arranges tables and chairs in cafeteria; cleans kitchen and craft rooms; collects and dumps trash; strips wax from floors, seals, and re-waxes them; vacuums and shampoos rugs; climbs and works on ladders; changes light bulbs; must be able to lift up to 80 pounds; picks up paper and debris from grounds.
Requirements – Knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment such as vacuum cleaners, power scrubbing, waxing and polishing machines, and dry and wet mops, and ability to use them economically and efficiently; some knowledge of various types of floors and the proper care of them; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; thoroughness; dependability; good physical condition.
Acceptable Experience and Training – Preferably some building cleaning experience and completion of a standard grade school course, preferably high school graduation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
