Job summary

McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama is seeking a Building Maintenance team member responsible for repair, security, safety and support of staff, visitors, structures and property. Duties include daily preventive maintenance, general upkeep of the facility, and assistance with events and deliveries.

Typical schedule is Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, with shifts varying by business needs. The role requires reliability, flexibility, and a focus on safety and service.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two years’ experience in maintenance or similar role.
  • General mechanical aptitude and safety‑conscious mindset.
  • Experience in plumbing, painting, drywall repair, minor electrical and HVAC preferred.
  • CPR certified or willing to obtain CPR certification.
  • Must be dependable with flexible hours including nights and holidays.
  • Valid driver license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily preventive maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
  • Repair and service building components and systems as needed.
  • Support event setup, break‑down and deliveries for activities.
  • Assist other departments to ensure safe, clean and welcoming environment.

Job description

Come join our team! The 40-hour per week Building Maintenance team member is responsible for the repair, security, safety and support of McWane Science Center's personnel, guests, structures and properties. Responsibilities include daily preventive maintenance and upkeep of the entire facility and property; set-up and break-down of tables, chairs, etc. for events and reserved lunches; handling incoming shipments of materials/packages; facilitating safety and evacuation procedures; and assisting all other departments as needed.

Position will generally be scheduled Tuesday through Saturday from 6:30AM until 3:30PM. Shift times may vary depending on business needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or GED.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a situation requiring good judgment and the exercise of responsibility for individuals and property.
  3. General mechanical aptitude.
  4. Experience in plumbing, painting, dry wall repair, minor electrical and minor HVAC.
  5. CPR certified or willing/able to become CPR certified.
  6. Must be dependable and able to work flexible hours including nights and holidays. This position requires weekend work.
  7. Must possess a valid Driver License subject to acceptable annual motor vehicle reports. Must provide verification of valid minimum liability insurance as required by State law.
  8. Possess honesty and integrity.
  9. Organized and efficient work habits.
  10. Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  11. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Minimum Physical Qualifications
  1. Capable of lifting moderately heavy objects (tables, desks, chairs, etc.) on a regular basis.
  2. Must be able to quickly assess situations and use good judgment to react to emergencies, visitor complaints, theft, etc.
  3. Must be able to access any area of the museum quickly including stairs, catwalks and ladders.
  4. Must be able to open and close circuit breaker box, flip breakers on and off and set and reset alarms.
  5. Must be able to climb 8 – 10’ ladders, to dust, pull pins, manipulate various devices as well as operate an electric lifting device.
  6. Must be able to pull the pin on a fire extinguisher and use it effectively.
  7. Must be able to communicate and enunciate clearly with portable radios and Public Address system.
  8. Must be able to stand, walk and climb steps and be mobile for 6 – 8 hours per day.
  9. Must be able to use a wide variety of common hand and power tools and possess general maintenance skills.
  10. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be able to push or pull with 75 lbs. of force.
  11. Crawl in confined spaces on the hands and knees to perform work/maneuver in close confinement.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more with or without corrective lenses.
  • Must be able to wear the proper PPE whenever necessary working conditions require action.
  • Exposure to constant or intermittent high noise levels.
  • Exposure to chemicals, fumes and vapors that could potentially affect the health of the employee.
  • Must be able to manipulate cleaning machinery, buffers, vacuum cleaner, etc.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend OSHA Safety Data Sheets and product labels.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
