Job summary

City of Cupertino is seeking a professional Building Inspector to perform inspections of buildings and structures in all stages of construction and to review plans for compliance with the California Code and local regulations. The role emphasizes customer service, independent judgment, and collaboration with architects, engineers, and contractors.

This full-time position reports to the Senior Building Inspector, with duties including on-site inspections, plan checking, and maintaining inspection

Qualifications

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• Three years of experience at a journey level in the building trades or one year of experience as a Building Inspector with a local government agency.
• Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) certification or ability to obtain one within one year of appointment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Perform on-site inspections for industrial, commercial, and residential buildings at various stages of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
• Issue correction notices and monitor compliance with corrective measures.
• Maintain records of building and inspection activities and complete related reports; issue certificates and permits as appropriate.
• Provide information by telephone, email and at the Public Counter regarding building codes, inspection process and permit applications.
• Confers with developers, contractors, architects, engineers, and others; explain and interpret applicable codes.
