The Village of Buffalo Grove and its community development department are seeking a full-time Plan Reviewer/ Building Inspector.
The Village of Buffalo Grove is located thirty-three miles northwest of downtown Chicago and twenty miles north of O’Hare International Airport. Under the general supervision of the Building Services Manager, the Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer will review plans, specifications and other submitted material for compliance with building codes, policies and jurisdiction requirements for commercial, industrial and residential buildings, both for new construction and renovation to existing buildings. Additionally, this position will be responsible for the inspection of a variety of building and structural installations, modifications and repairs to determine whether plans comply with legal requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer will perform and manage a variety of complex, technical, and administrative functions.
Examines plans and other permit documents to assure compliance with applicable technical codes
Provides applicant deficiencies/approvals and reviews revisions of submitted plans and other permit documents
Prepares reports, stop work orders, notices of violation and citations, and testifies in court as needed for enforcement of applicable regulations
Coordinates activities with the Code Enforcement Division of the Police Department, Engineering Department and Community Development Department as needed
Inspects residential and commercial buildings and provides information to Village residents
Continuously updates and maintains skills regarding changing building technology
Maintains accurate records of inspection results and follow-up activities within BS&A
Gathers results of general inspections and submits to department staff
Assists with answering inquiries over the phone, in-person, or via email regarding general code information, as well as specific project information
Works closely with other department personnel and/or outside contractors
Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, planning, architecture, construction management, or construction technology is preferred
- A minimum of three (3) years of related work experience, preferably in a government setting
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above
- Must possess and maintain in good standing, a valid Illinois driver's license.
- Must possess and maintain in good standing an International Code Council (ICC) Residential Building and ICC Commercial Building Inspection Certification
- Must have or obtain an ICC Residential Plans Examiner Certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of current building technology, design, and construction
- Knowledge of all applicable building and zoning codes and the ability to apply them to
- active or proposed construction projects
- Knowledge of construction specialties, i.e. structural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing,
- and fire protection
- Skill in building and zoning code research
- Skill in reasoning and interpretations
- Skill in use of computer hardware and applicable computer software
- Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers,
- supervisor, the public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive
- work direction
- Follows safety policies and procedures
- Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor
- Reports all accidents to supervisor immediately
- Follows recognized safe work practices
