Job summary

The City of Turlock is seeking Building Inspectors I or II to inspect routine and complex building systems at various construction stages. I incumbents may progress to II after experience and ICC certifications.

Responsibilities include examining plans, ensuring code compliance, and coordinating with other departments. The position offers paths for advancement, a union-backed role, and mandatory licensing with overtime eligibility.

Qualifications

• Four years of construction experience equivalent to journey level construction work.
• One year of inspection experience with a public agency similar to City of Turlock Building Inspector Trainee.
• Completion of 30 college units with major course work in Building Inspection Technology, Construction Management, or a related field.
• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Accept, review, and process a wide variety of permit applications relating to construction and development.
• Review site plans, architectural drawings, and structural calculations submitted with development permit applications.
• Calculate and collect required development fees for construction permit applications.
• Provide information at the public counter regarding development regulations and safety issues.
• Perform counter plan check of fences, walls, small room additions, patios, decks, and other small projects.
• Inspect foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing and other building system elements.
• Coordinate inspection activities with other city departments and public agencies.
• Assist in investigations of zoning, land use and construction code enforcement and abatement issues.
