Job description

Description:

Under limited supervision, responsible for reviewing construction plans for permit issuance, performing inspections, investigating code violation complaints, and assisting the building official as needed. Apply knowledge of state construction codes and city ordinances to ensure compliance, with significant contact with the public, contractors, and through various communication methods. Hiring range dependent on qualifications.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Review residential plans for code compliance, prepare summaries, and transmit revisions or approve permits.
  2. Meet with applicants and professionals to clarify codes and ensure conformity, resolving differences professionally.
  3. Conduct inspections, issue correction notices and stop work orders when necessary.
  4. Document inspection results in the designated system.
  5. Provide information and answer questions from the public via various channels.
  6. Resolve complaints related to inspections through inspections and report writing.
  7. Assist customers with code interpretations.
  8. Maintain required certifications and guide staff and the public on code matters.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Post-secondary technical training in building, mechanical, or plumbing inspection.
  • Certification through the Department of Labor and Industry as a building official-limited or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Combination of education and experience demonstrating necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain applicable certifications through continuing education.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Apply professional and managerial principles within established goals.
  • Handle complex situations with analytical and inductive reasoning.
  • Manage relationships requiring cooperation, explanation, and enforcement.
  • Perform physical tasks at construction sites, including climbing and entering confined spaces.
  • Excellent customer service skills, maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Communicate complex information clearly.
  • Use Microsoft Office and specialized software.
  • Manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and mathematical aptitude.
  • Plan and organize work efficiently.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with municipal inspections.
  • Certification as a building official by the Department of Labor and Industry.
  • ICC certifications or equivalent from recognized organizations.

Other Requirements:

  • Pass criminal background check.
  • Valid MN driver’s license.
  • At least 18 years old.
