Qualifications

Job description

Building Inspector/Electrical - Hourly Pay $25.34

Days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Definition: Under general to limited supervision, inspects electrical portions of building construction/modification projects, enforces a variety of City codes and ordinances, project management.

Essential Functions

  • Makes thorough on-site inspections of electrical construction projects at various stages to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building and zoning codes and ordinances.
  • Issue electrical construction permits in the areas the city is authorized to permit and inspect.
  • Identifies code violations and informs contractor of corrections needed.
  • Responds to complaints regarding possible violations of various City ordinances.
  • Determines if violations exist and takes appropriate actions to ensure the situation is corrected to the best of his/her ability.
  • Conducts a variety of field tests necessary to ensure compliance with applicable building codes.
  • Conducts building inspections under the auspices of City building inspector.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills and Other Characteristics
  • Thorough knowledge of National and International Electrical Codes and/or related construction codes.
  • Some knowledge of plumbing and mechanical systems desired.
  • Knowledge of various ordinances of the City of Artesia.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate zoning laws, building codes and other related codes.
  • Ability in reading blueprints.
  • Knowledge of enforcement procedures for City ordinance violations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, other staff and the public.
  • Ability to operate a computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and permitting software.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Skill in inspecting construction projects to identify violations of local, state and federal codes and ordinances.
  • Ability to climb in attics, on roofs and ladders.
  • Ability to climb in and out of ditches.
Qualifications
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license at time of hire.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Experience equivalent to three (3) years of Journey level electrical trades or Foreman level work. Technical, university or college training in a general construction field may substitute for electrical contracting experience at a rate of one (1) year of education for one-half (1/2) year experience for a maximum of two (2) years.
  • Electrician, electrical journeyman, or electrical contractor license issued by the New Mexico Regulations and Licensing Department.
  • Must obtain certification as an electrical inspector from the State of New Mexico and the I.C. B O. per State of NM requirements, within one year of hire.
  • Current state certified municipal, county or state electrical inspector desired.
  • Additional certification in Plumbing, Mechanical and General Construction desired.
