Job summary

Clermont County, Ohio is seeking a Building Inspector to perform inspections on residential, commercial, and industrial properties for safety and code compliance. You will work with contractors and owners to resolve code issues and document findings in daily logs and reports.

Requirements include a high school diploma or ICC Permit Technician Certification, with certification trajectories available within a year. Strong reading of construction plans and customer service skills are essential.

Qualifications

What You’ll Do:
  • Conduct inspections on residential, commercial, and industrial properties to ensure safety and compliance with Ohio codes.
  • Work directly with contractors and property owners to provide guidance and resolve code-related issues.
  • Document findings and complete daily logs, reports, and records of code violations.
  • Respond to referrals and ensure compliance with Ohio Administrative Code regulations.
  • Attend job-related meetings, seminars, and training to stay up to date with industry standards.
What We’re Looking For/Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a high school diploma (or GED equivalent) or ICC Permit Technician Certification. Must have or be able to obtain a Residential Code Official or Residential Electrical Inspector Specialization, according to the Ohio Board of Building Standards (OBBS) standard certification requirements, within one year of date of hire.

In addition, the following minimum experience is required:

  • 1-4 years of commercial trade experience, OR
  • completion of high school vocational program or career center in construction related field, OR
  • associates degree in construction field, OR
  • complete level 1 OBBS requirements, and ability to read construction documents, plans, and drawings, OR
  • at least 5 years in skilled trades residential, OR
  • journeyperson or FSI certificate, OR
  • bachelors degree plus 1-4 years residential building experience, OR
  • Residential general contractor, OR
  • at least three years residential or commercial electrical installation or three years training in department.

A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required. Must demonstrate and maintain a positive attitude, good customer service skills, and ability to cooperate with other others. Must have knowledge of office practices and management. Ability toto read and write common vocabulary, proofread material, recognize errors and make corrections; and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Must possess ability to traverse rough terrain and endure inclement weather conditions. A large percentage of time is spent in transit. Exposure to high voltage, dirt, dust, temperature, and noise. There are recurring work conditions that involve change and/or potential for injury.
