Job summary

Board of Miami County Commissioners (Ohio) is seeking a Building Inspector to perform on-site inspections of residential and commercial buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. You will review plans, communicate with contractors and homeowners, and prepare detailed inspection reports.

The role requires completion of high school or equivalent, and Ohio Building Code experience/certifications.

Qualifications

  • Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent.
  • Meets the Ohio Building Code (OBC) Experience Requirements for Building Inspector or Building Inspector Trainee certification.
  • Meets the OBC Experience Requirements for Electrical Safety Inspector or Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee certification, per 4101:7-3-01 ORC, or equivalent education/experience.

Job description

CLASSIFICATION PURPOSE

Conducts various inspections of buildings and structures for the Department of Development, ensuring compliance with safety codes and standards.

JOB DUTIES
  • Under general direction, performs assigned on-site inspections of residential and commercial/industrial buildings to ensure compliance with appropriate codes, performs assigned on-site inspections of building construction in progress. Drives to work sites, conducts inspections of wiring installation and repair, foundations, crawl spaces, ventilation, insulation, structures, etc.
  • Reviews assigned building plans for compliance to appropriate codes and standards, communicates with contractors, homeowners, architects, etc. regarding code standards and compliance, collects evidence to assist in prosecution of code violators, serves as liaison between department and fire prevention personnel.
  • Prepares and submits inspection reports.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.

MINIMUM CLASS QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
  • Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent
  • Meets the Ohio Building Code (OBC) Experience Requirements for Building Inspector or Building Inspector Trainee certification classification
  • Meets the OBC Experience Requirements for Electrical Safety Inspector or Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee certification classification, each per 4101:7-3-01 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Must obtain interim certification within (90) days and Building Inspector Certification and Electrical Safety Inspector Certification from the Ohio Board of Building Standards within twelve (12) months of appointment and eligibility to obtain.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

The employee is exposed to, must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of floor openings, wall openings and holes, open-sided floors, platforms and runways, stairs, fixed industrial stairs, portable wood and metal ladders, fixed ladders, personal protective equipment, occupational foot protection due to potential impact of objects to the feet, medical and first aid, scaffolding, air contaminants, noisy operations or activities, occupational head protection due to potential impact to the head from objects, portable fire extinguishers, lead (including lead based paints or lead from other sources), crowds, potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons, potentially vicious animals, life threatening situations, hot, cold, wet, humid or windy weather conditions, and hazardous driving conditions.

Monday - Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM

COMPENSATION

$34.00 - $46.00 per hour/ DOQ

FLSA

Non-Exempt from Overtime
