Job summary

City of Pryor Creek is seeking a Building Inspector to oversee construction within Pryor Creek city limits, ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal building regulations and ordinances.

The role requires obtaining Oklahoma state licenses within 24 months, a valid Oklahoma driver’s license, and the ability to interpret building codes. This is a full-time, on-site position reporting to the Mayor and City Council.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must obtain Oklahoma Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Building licenses within 24 months of employment (or already licensed).
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma driver's license.
  • Must be able to interpret International Building, Mechanical, and Plumbing codes and the National Electric Code.

Responsibilities

  • Issue building permits and collect fees.
  • Review zoning classification for appropriate construction.
  • Inspect sites to ensure compliance with codes and approved plans.
  • Inspect building construction during construction.
  • Maintain filing system for site records.
  • Collect and administer permits and inspection fees; relate to state agencies.
  • Investigate flood plain location relative to building site.
  • Attend City Council/Board meetings as required.
  • Prepare monthly activity reports for City Council.
  • Complete annual reports for City, State, and Federal agencies.

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Building Inspector has the direct responsibility for overseeing all construction located in the city limits of Pryor Creek, Oklahoma. The Building Inspector is responsible for enforcement of all City, State, and Federal building regulations and ordinances.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Issue building permits and collect fees
  • Review zoning classification for appropriate construction
  • Review plans for building specifications, to ensure they meet all codes as defined in the City of Pryor Creek code of Ordinances.
  • Inspect the actual building site to confirm that it complies with building regulations and agrees with the building plans submitted to the building official for his approval
  • Inspect building construction during construction
  • Develop or retain a filing system to maintain records on each construction site
  • Collection and administration of all permits and inspection fees, to include all fees to the state agencies.
  • Investigate flood plain location in relationship to building site to ensure compliance of flood plain ordinance
  • Ensure all regulations are properly followed and report to Planning and Zoning Board any modifications.
  • Maintain records to changes in State laws concerning changes in zoning and annexation laws
  • Resolve complaints Code Enforcement regarding condition of property (RE: Housing Code)
  • Attend City Council and other City Board meetings as required
  • Attend Board of Adjustment meetings as needed
  • Create monthly activities report to City Council
  • Complete annual reports as required for City, State, and Federal agencies
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Mayor and Council

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • High School graduate, GED, or equivalent experience and education.
  • Through formal training, self-study, and correspondence, prepare for and become certified in the building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical areas of inspection.
  • Must have a current valid Oklahoma driver's license.
  • Must obtain State of Oklahoma Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Building State Licenses within twenty-four (24) months after employment, or already have those licenses.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must have the ability to interpret and administer the International Building, Mechanical, andPlumbing codes, as well as the National Electric Code
  • Must be able to do inspections in crawlspaces under structures and in attics
  • Must be able to do plan revision of construction documents
  • Assist the Fire Marshal in fire investigations
  • Must have a working knowledge of the effects of natural gas, C.O., and hydrogen sulfide
  • Must be able to meet the public and explain the City's policies and procedures, as well as the codes and ordinances of the City of Pryor Creek
  • Must be able to evaluate the work and aptitude of contractors
  • Demonstrate the ability to think and make decisions under pressure and handle emergencies

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to do medium to heavy work 10%-20% of the time. The remaining time light work will be required.
  • Medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to:
  • Climb- ascending or descending ladders, ramps, and the like, using the feet and legs and/or hands and arms
  • Access roof and crawlspace
  • Bend, squat or stand for extended amounts of time
  • Walk on rough or uneven ground or terrain in various weather conditions.

This is a safety-sensitive position and subject to random drug testing.
