Pay Range:

Hiring Range: $25.12 - $30.14 Per Hour

Full Range: $25.12 - $35.17 Per Hour


Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.

The Pima County Development Services Department is currently searching for the right candidate who has a strong background in residential and commercial building construction and codes to fill our Building Inspector I positions. In this role, your responsibilities include verifying building construction adherence to County building regulations, as well as related codes, laws, ordinances, and statutes. Essential Functions:


As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  1. Inspects commercial and residential structures and regulated equipment for compliance with permitted activities and County and industry general and specialized standard codes;
  2. Conducts or assists other Building Inspectors with complex commercial or commercial/residential structures and regulated equipment inspections;
  3. Reviews plans, specifications, and related technical materials to determine compliance with applicable permits, codes, and industry standards;
  4. Schedules and documents inspection activities, to include issuing approval and correction notices;
  5. Identifies and documents defects or deviations from permitted or code-required construction activities, issues rejection or correction notices, performs follow-up inspections to verify corrections, and completes reports;
  6. Consults with contractors, property owners, and construction-permit holders to assist them with general code compliance and in resolving defects and deviations from permitted activities and applicable codes and standards;
  7. Identifies discrepancies, potential conflicts, and recommended changes to building codes, laws, statutes, and standards for management attention and decision;
  8. Prepares and submits routine, recurring, and special reports to management;
  9. Operates and performs operator-level servicing of assigned County vehicles;
  10. Maintains activity records in manual and automated systems.


Minimum Qualifications:


Five years of experience as a contractor, engineer, architect, building inspector, or as a superintendent, foreman, or mechanic in charge of construction.


OR:


Three years of experience in a public-sector building inspection/enforcement setting as a Codes Enforcement, Building or Plans Examiner, AND two (2) current International Codes Council (ICC) certifications as a Residential Inspector or related certifications.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

ICC certifications as a building inspector or related certifications.

Experience with the application of building codes.

Experience with structural engineering principles to include load paths.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

Experience with GIS and inspection software.

Experience with zoning/grading regulations.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certificates : Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.

Special Notice Items : The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. All positions require the ability to work outdoors in the extremes of heat, cold, inclement weather, with exposure to dust, dirt, wind, construction activities and materials and to traverse rough terrain.
