Position Description

BUILDING INSPECTOR

JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

THE BUILDING INSPECTOR INSPECTS BUILDINGS AND BUILDING SYSTEMS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION, ALTERATION AND REPAIR FOR COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE STATE AND LOCAL CODES AS WELL AS CONFORMANCE WITH PROJECT CONDITIONS. THIS POSITION ALSO PERFORMS OTHER DUTIES WITHIN THE BUILDING AND PERMITTING DIVISION OF THE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

NONE.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION AND DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs required inspections of residential, commercial, and trade permits during various stages of construction and remodeling; ensures that work is being completed in accordance with approved plans and specifications and in compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, and codes.
2. Assists with reviewing plans and specifications; interprets codes and regulations; drafts and distributes inspection reports.
3. Interacts with the public, explaining technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences, including owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public.
4. Investigates and resolves building-related complaints; monitors for unpermitted work; issues stop work orders, notices of violations, citations, as necessary; tracks violations for compliance.
5. Performs administrative duties supporting the permitting process, such as scheduling inspections, entering data, maintaining records, and assisting customers.
6. Maintains knowledge of building codes, regulations, zoning, and land development requirements.
7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of construction, engineering, and building codes and regulations.
• Ability to read and understand building plans.

• Ability to interact professionally and calmly with citizens, contractors, and developers.
• Ability to operate city vehicles.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends if necessary.

Education, Credentials, Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Three (3) years of related construction or building inspection experience.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, ICC certification in residential and commercial inspections.
• GSWCC Level IB Certification.
• Valid Class C Georgia driver’s license required within 30 days of hire and must be maintained.
• Acceptable motor vehicle record required throughout employment.

Physical Characteristics:

Work performed in office and field; must access, navigate, and inspect active construction sites, including walking, climbing ladders, and kneeling; able to travel to sites; lift up to 20 pounds.

Environmental Factors:

Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions, exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals; working around moving vehicles and equipment; wearing safety gear as required.
