City of Fort Lauderdale is seeking a Building Inspector to examine residential, commercial, and industrial installations for compliance with the Florida Building Code and HVHZ. The role requires coordination with architects, engineers, and contractors and includes issuing notices of violation and Stop Work Orders when necessary.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a CGC license, and a Florida Building Inspector license within one year.
The Building Inspector inspects building installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for compliance with the Florida Building Code (FBC), High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), safety standards, laws, ordinances and other County, State and Federal regulations.
In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).
This posting will remain open continuously, with the first review of applications scheduled for September 28, 2026. Applications will be reviewed periodically thereafter until a qualified candidate is selected and hired.
Candidates who do not currently possess the required Building Inspector license may be considered for appointment as a Building Inspector Trainee, provided they meet all other minimum qualifications for the position, including possession of a valid Certified General Contractor (CGC) license. Building Inspector Trainees will be compensated at a rate 5% below the minimum of the Building Inspector pay range until the required Building Inspector license is obtained. The license must be obtained within one year of appointment.

The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, walk, push, pull, grasp, stand, and access heights or areas where limited space is available.
