Job summary

The City of Rochester Hills is seeking a Building Official/Supervisor to manage plan review and inspection services to ensure compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. The role reports to the Deputy Director and requires leadership of the plan review and inspection staff.

Responsibilities include scheduling, directing, audits, site visits, and providing technical guidance on codes and regulations. Qualified candidates will have an associate degree, 5+ years of inspections/plan reviews, MI

Qualifications

• Associate Degree or higher in construction or related field is required and 5+ years in inspections/plan reviews.
• Experience supervising staff with coaching and performance reviews is expected.
• MI registration under Act 407 as Building Official or Inspector/Plan Reviewer is required or will be pursued.
• ICC certifications or ability to obtain within 3 years are expected.

Responsibilities

• Schedule and manage staff coverage and time off.
• Direct plan reviews and inspections, supervise staff, interview and hire.
• Provide leadership and guidance to assigned staff.
• Interpret codes, ordinances, and regulations.
• Coordinate and monitor plan reviews/inspection activities for compliance.
• Perform audits and quality control for plans and inspections.
• Conduct site visits for quality control with contractors.
• Assign complaints and ensure follow-through for compliance.
• Represent department at meetings and court proceedings as needed.
• Oversee enforcement, fleet coordination, and public inquiries.
• Provide monthly reports to Deputy Director and Director.
• Respond to emergencies as needed.
• Back-up Deputy Director/Director as required.

Valid Michigan Driver’s license (≤4 points)
