Job summary

Job description

Under the supervision of the Building and Grounds Director, performs a variety of general custodial duties in the care and cleaning of County owned and operated buildings and facilities. To perform related work as required.

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  1. Sweep, scrub, vacuum, dust, and mop all public areas of County owned and operated buildings.
  2. Clean and maintain bathrooms which includes replenishing supplies.
  3. Wash windows, walls, and mirrors as needed.
  4. Gather and dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials.
  5. Maintain cleaning supplies and equipment and ensure they are available and in good working condition.
  6. Performs other duties as directed.

Requirements include the following:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year of progressively more responsible experience in facilities cleaning.
  • The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, methods, procedures, and tasks involved in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of the practices and safety issues involved in cleaning public facilities.
  • Able to read and follow instructions.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with other county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology and the ability to learn new software programs applicable to the position.
  • Must wear and maintain duty uniform
