Job summary

Transwestern is seeking a Building Engineer to oversee maintenance, repairs, and energy efficiency for a Chesapeake facility. You will manage preventive and corrective work across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems, coordinating with contractors and internal teams.

The role requires a minimum of two years related experience with a strong understanding of building operations, safety, and documentation. Expect light to moderate on‑call duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with related experience and/or trade school training is required.
  • Minimum 3 years building maintenance experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of building systems operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Appropriate license/permit for trade as required (e.g., Journeyman or Master Electrician).
  • Knowledgeable in energy management systems, techniques, and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repair of buildings, industrial systems, equipment, and grounds.
  • Inspect building systems including fire alarms, HVAC, and plumbing to ensure operation within design capabilities and meet client environmental conditions.
  • Perform assigned repairs, emergency, and preventive maintenance.
  • Complete maintenance and repair records as required.
  • Lead troubleshooting and repair of buildings and installed systems such as plumbing, roofs, and HVAC.
  • Direct mechanics, technicians, and outside contractors on assigned projects.
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations and summon additional assistance as needed.
  • Maintain an energy management program to operate all systems efficiently, reducing operating costs.
  • Maintain the building lighting system, including element and ballast repairs or replacements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

The Building Engineer is responsible for completing work orders, grounds maintenance, painting, caulking, HVAC, plumbing, drywall, electrical, and other maintenance as needed. The engineer performs general preventive maintenance and corrective repair of buildings, industrial systems, equipment, and grounds; monitors building operations and performance.

Essential Job Functions

Position Requirements

  • Appropriate license/permit for trade as required (e.g., Journeyman or Master Electrician, City Licenses such as Refrigeration Certificate, High Pressure Boiler or Steam Operator).
  • Knowledgeable in energy management systems, techniques, and operations.
  • Basic skills with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Thorough understanding of HVAC, electrical, and building automation systems.
  • Ability to understand and give general instructions in standard situations.
  • Use manual and power‑driven tools.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • May require shift work, overtime, and/or on‑call duties.
  • Physical ability to stoop, stand, climb, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
