Building Controls Engineer.
Location: West Michigan (Grand Rapids Area) | Full-Time.
Position Overview:
On behalf of my client, I am seeking an experienced Building Automation Controls Engineer with experience in Tridium Niagara technologies. This permanent, hands-on technical position involves leading the implementation, commissioning, integration, and ongoing support of intelligent building automation systems for commercial and industrial facilities in West Michigan.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for the complex programming and functional performance of complete building control systems, ensuring seamless performance, reliability, and client satisfaction. Key Responsibilities:
Implementation & Programming:
- Configure, program, and implement Building Automation Systems (BAS) including all sub-systems (security, lighting, data networks) to meet project requirements.
- Create and modify system databases and field controller programs on platforms including Tridium N4, Honeywell IRM, JCI CCT, and others.
- Develop and test complex software programs necessary for proper system operation.
- Load and commission all system and network-level controllers.
Commissioning & Technical Support:
- Conduct system validation for complete functionality and troubleshoot problems with other trades.
- Manage and execute onsite system commissioning, functional testing, and system validation.
- Provide technical assistance to field technicians, project managers, and customers throughout project execution.
- Perform regular system updates, patches, and optimizations as part of service agreements.
- Analyze building performance data to identify energy-saving opportunities.
System Design & Security:
- Configure graphical user interfaces (GUI) for system monitoring and control.
- Implement security measures to protect BAS from cyber threats.
- Configure BAS networks, including IP addressing, firewalls, and remote access.
- Ensure integration with other building management platforms (SCADA, IoT, cloud-based solutions).
Documentation & Training:
- Develop and maintain project documentation, including network diagrams, system architecture layouts, sequences of operations, and as-built drawings.
- Track field change information for the creation of as-built drawings and software.
- Provide training and support to building operators and maintenance staff.
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
Collaboration:
- Keep the installation team and customer informed of job progress and issues.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers, electricians, IT teams, and facility managers.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors for system upgrades and expansions.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3+ years of hands-on experience implementing, programming, and commissioning BAS solutions using Tridium Niagara.
- Proficiency in Tridium N4 platform programming preferred.
- Familiarity with HVAC systems, lighting controls, energy management systems, and enterprise security solutions.
- Solid understanding of IP networking fundamentals related to BAS deployments.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent documentation abilities, including wiring diagrams, network schematics, and sequence of operations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, well organized, and capable of handling multiple assignments.
- Ability to relate technical knowledge to a non-technical audience.
Preferred:
- Niagara 4 Technical Certification (TCP).
- Experience with Honeywell WEBs, Distech, Vykon, or other Niagara-based products.
- Familiarity with smart building technologies and IoT devices.
- Niagara 4 Enterprise Security Technical Certification Program.
- Experience integrating multiple building systems (HVAC, lighting, security, etc.)
