Job summary

City of Suffolk is seeking a Building Inspector I to enforce state and local building codes across multiple trades. The role requires interpreting construction plans, coordinating inspections, and maintaining accurate records while upholding courtesy and firmness with the public.

The candidate must meet high school graduation and 3 years of trade experience, possess a valid driver's license, and gain appropriate certifications within 18 months, with full certification within 3 years per Virginia

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent and 3 years of experience in trade.
  • Requires a valid driver''s license.
  • Inspector shall be certified in one of the appropriate Residential or Commercial certifications within 18 months of hiring.
  • Virginia Tradesman License preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces State and local building codes in building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing areas.
  • Interprets and reviews construction plans and specifications to ensure code compliance.
  • Maintains and files inspection reports; coordinates daily inspection routes and communicates with owners, developers and contractors.
  • May conduct inspections of electrical, mechanical and plumbing installations; reviews plans and issues violation notices as needed.
  • Answers inquiries about inspections and permits; participates in continued training and certification.
