Job summary

City of Suffolk is seeking a Building Inspector I under general supervision to enforce state and local building codes across building, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing areas. You will review construction plans, inspect installations, and coordinate schedules with other inspectors to ensure code compliance and public safety.

Applicants must have a high school diploma and 3 years in the trade; certification in one area or ability to obtain within 18 months; valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience in trade.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• An inspector shall be certified in one Residential or Commercial area within 18 months and fully certified within 3 years.

Responsibilities

• Enforces state and local building codes for buildings, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing systems.
• Reviews construction plans and specifications for code compliance.
• Coordinates inspection schedules with other inspectors and communicates with owners and contractors.
• Prepares and maintains inspection reports and records.
• Interacts with the public to provide information about inspections and permits.
