Job summary

The City of Irondale, supported by the Personnel Board of Jefferson County, is seeking a Building Inspections Officer to enforce building, plumbing, electrical and gas codes and city zoning ordinances. This role ensures safe occupancy and construction, interacts with contractors and homeowners, and maintains comprehensive records of permits, plans, and inspections.

Qualifications

• Driver's license is required.
• Experience interpreting plans and structures for building code compliance (e.g., plumbing electrical, mechanical, carpentry).
• Experience in at least one of the following: Installing electrical systems; HVAC systems; Plumbing or gas piping; Framing/carpentry; overseeing residential/commercial construction.

Responsibilities

• Conducts building inspections following professional inspection procedures and uses testing methods to ensure code compliance and zoning adherence.
• Enforces codes and ordinances by reviewing plans and conducting inspections for safety and compliance.
• Conducts electrical inspections by comparing installations to plan requirements and codes.
• Conducts gas inspections by checking for leaks, proper venting, and calculating BTUs to ensure compliance.
• Maintains inspection records, including permits, plans, fees, and court-ready documentation.
