Job summary

The City of Mountain Brook is seeking a Building Inspections Officer to enforce building, plumbing, electrical, and gas codes and zoning ordinances. Incumbents ensure safe occupancy and compliance for existing and new structures, coordinating with contractors and homeowners while maintaining records of plans, permits, and stop work orders.

Ideal candidates will have driver’s license and experience interpreting plans for code compliance across trades, plus expertise in at least one of electrical,

Qualifications

• Driver's license.
• Experience interpreting plans and structures for building code compliance (e.g., plumbing electrical, mechanical, carpentry).
• Experience in at least one of the following areas: Installing electrical systems; Installing and sizing heating and cooling systems and vents; Installing plumbing systems or gas piping; Performing structural framing/carpentry work; overseeing residential or commercial construction.

Responsibilities

• Conducts building inspections following professional inspection procedures and using testing methods to ensure compliance with codes and zoning.
• Enforces codes by reviewing plans and performing inspections for safety and compliance.
• Conducts electrical inspections by comparing installations to plan requirements.
• Conducts gas inspections by checking gas leaks, vent lines, and BTU calculations for compliance.
• Reviews plans to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances and issues Certificates of Occupancy.
• Maintains inspection records and prepares for court cases; collects fees and documents actions.
