The Building Automation Technician will be responsible for the safe, reliable, and economical operation of the building automation systems. This position is responsible for executing technical service of all building control systems at UMass Health properties.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on building automation systems and components in both critical and non-critical environments. Test and verify system readings ensuring optimal system operation.
  • Install, configure, and commission building automation systems (BAS) including controllers, sensors, actuators, and other related devices.
  • Perform system checkout and assist in automation systems startups. Complete and submit work orders and reports covering all aspects of each assignment and activity.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex building control systems and components. Discuss problems with the manager and advise on the best course of action. Work with other departments to arrange repairs.
  • Complete adjustments, calibrations, and repairs.
License/Certification/Education:

Position Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

  • Technical certification from leading BAS brand (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Trane).

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Proven experience (typically 2+ years) as a Building Automation Technician or in a related field.
  • Four years of experience in building automation industry, engineering, and programming background.
  • Experience with specific BAS brands or software platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Trane).
  • Excellent understanding of HVAC or other building or electronic control systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of application programming languages.
  • Skilled in programming, job start-up and checkout, and troubleshooting.
  • Full understanding of the operation of HVAC controls and HVAC equipment, including written sequences of operation.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and control circuitry.
  • Certifications related to building automation or HVAC (e.g., BACnet Certification) or within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of networking and IP communication protocols.
  • Experience with energy management systems.

Unless certification, licensure, or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
