Job summary

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, TX is seeking a Building Attendant II - Day to perform custodial maintenance of buildings and related services. The role includes restroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and preparation for meetings and events.

Qualifications

• Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English well enough to comprehend MSDS on cleansers, chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.

Responsibilities

• Provides general cleaning in all restrooms a minimum of twice a day, to include material restock, trash removal from all areas, disinfection of high touch areas and spot mopping as needed.
• Spot cleans all common spaces such as hallways, lobbies, conference rooms, break rooms, study rooms, stairways, locker rooms and general wipe down of furniture and trash removal.
• Strips, waxes and polishes floors as scheduled including deep cleaning and scrubbing floors and walls as needed. Move furniture as needed.
• Cleans and washes storefront glass windows on a weekly basis as needed or per request.
• Cleans and polishes furniture and equipment as needed in all common areas.

Scope of Job

To perform manual work involving the custodial maintenance ofbuildings and miscellaneous related services.

Description of Duties

• Performs general cleaning on all buildings including but notlimited to entrance exteriors and drinking fountains daily or otherareas as needed.
• Participates in the preparation of areas for meetings, events,seminars and other student, faculty and staff functions.
• Picks up and disposes of material to be recycled.
• Responsible for mentoring and training new employees andcommunicating work assignments to ensure completion withinestablished time frames.
• Advises employees of department changes of special assignmentsor work routines.
• Assists in inventory control and distributes requestedmaterial.
• May be required to have flexible work schedule, including butnot limited to working evenings, weekends, Holidays and overtime onprojects and/or events or emergencies.
• May be required to carry a two-way radio and be available on an"On call" basis.
• Cleans, maintains, and services custodial equipment after everyuse.
• Completes assigned work orders during shift as directed.
• Participates and completes mandatory or assignedtrainings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

General supervision with detailed instructions on specialassignments.

Supervision Given

Occasionally supervises assigned custodial personnel.

Required Education

Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English wellenough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) oncleansers, chemicals, and other containers, and to understand workorders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written workdirections.

Preferred Education

High school graduation or equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications

As condition of employment this position requires the applicant tobe authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for OfficialUniversity Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157,applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check fortheir most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of StateDrivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from theirprior State of residence(s).

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience as a Building Attendant I or itsequivalent.

Preferred Experience

Two (2) or more years experience as a Building Attendant I or itsequivalent in a college or university.

Equipment

Knowledge of janitorial equipment and of its care and maintenancerequirements.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Workschedule: commonly day shift with weekend or night work onoccasion. Usual office building conditions. Some exposure toinclement weather when moving between buildings and emptying trash.May be exposed to other hazardous wastes, chemicals, and/orconditions in assigned area. UTRGV is a distributed institution,which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the RioGrande Valley.

Must be physically able to perform all essential functions andduties of the job. Requires considerable stooping, bending,kneeling, walking, lifting, and carrying of heavy objects toperform job duties. Requires moving, lifting, carrying, pushing,and pulling of heavy furniture, equipment, trash cans, boxes,files, filing cabinets, and other objects weighing up to 50 lbs.when working alone and 100 lbs. with help. Must be able to climbstep ladders and maintain balance to clean and wash windows andlighting.
