Job summary

East Hawaii Region HHSC is seeking a Building & Grounds Utility Worker for Hilo Benioff Medical Center to help keep hospital facilities safe, functional and welcoming. The role covers preventive maintenance, grounds keeping, and basic repairs with a focus on teamwork and hands-on execution.

Requirements include a high school diploma (preferred) and a Hawaii Type 3 driver’s license; two years’ prior related experience is expected.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Two years of building and grounds maintenance experience.
  • Valid Hawaii Driver’s License (Type 3) required; traffic abstract may be requested.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs on hospital equipment, fixtures, and facilities.
  • Support carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting with basic tasks.
  • Perform routine groundskeeping including mowing, landscaping, and exterior maintenance.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and waste.
  • Maintain tools and inventory with proper cleaning and upkeep.
  • Follow safety, infection control, and facility policies while collaborating with staff.

As a Building & Grounds Utility Worker, you will support essential maintenance and repair work that ensures a reliable and healing environment. Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs on hospital equipment, fixtures, and facilities
  • Support skilled trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting) with basic repair and upkeep tasks
  • Perform routine groundskeeping duties including mowing, landscaping, and exterior maintenance
  • Operate equipment and vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and waste
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory while ensuring proper cleaning and upkeep
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and facility policies while working collaboratively with staff and departments
Required Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences are credited based on a 40-hour work week.

Qualifications
  • Education: No minimum required; high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Experience: Combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years in building and grounds maintenance
  • Licensure: Valid State of Hawaii Driver’s License (Type 3) required (evidence of license and original copy of traffic abstract is required)

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
