BUFFETT SCHOLARS AND TEEN PROGRAMS MANAGER

The Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) is a vibrant community center with a spirited history of strong programs, broad partnerships, and grassroots community organizing. Located on the grounds of Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School and Vel Phillips Memorial High School, the LCEC has a mission of building community, creating opportunities, and enriching education.

The Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager leads the LCEC’s comprehensive afterschool programs for middle and high school youth. These programs include our middle and high school after school programs, our middle school summer camp program, our high school summer internship program (Youth Action Summer Internship - YASI), and the Jane Burrows Buffett Scholars Program which empowers selected young people to achieve their college or trade aspirations with support throughout their high school career and their first year post high school. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about working with young people, implementing high-quality and culturally relevant programming, and developing youth leaders through enriching experiences. This position reports to the Director of Youth Programs.

The LCEC collaborates with various partners throughout Dane County and emphasizes the importance of positive youth development, racial and social justice, and a trauma-informed approach in enrichment activities. The Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager coordinates with the Director of Youth Programs to develop, implement and facilitate teen programming for our diverse group of middle and high school youth.

HOURS: Full time, non-exempt. The schedule is typically Monday-Friday, 11:00am-7:00pm, with some additional meeting and staff development hours required. Summer hours are typically Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Special events and field trips may require extended evening and weekend hours.

COMPENSATION: $57,232/year plus health insurance, dental insurance, life & short/long term disability insurance, 403(b), flexible spending account for healthcare purchases, as well as three weeks of vacation time, twelve days (96 hours) of sick time, and four personal days.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Implementation

• Design and implement engaging learning experiences that support middle and high school students’ academic growth, physical well-being, and social emotional development incorporating youth voice and choice into our daily programming.
• Collaborate with Teen Programs staff to support recruitment and retention efforts.
• Ensure collection of Teen Programs participant registration information
• Develop strong positive relationships with middle and high school youth and their families and engage families in consistent communication.
• Co-create program goals and expectations with LCEC staff, teen programs youth, and their families and help ensure accountability to those goals and expectations.
• Encourage youth to take part in collaborative group activities that help them develop new skills, build confidence, and strengthen their connections with peers and the community.
• Support young people as they problem solve personal issues and help to provide them with positive and healthy solutions as they navigate our world.
• Identify and coordinate with outside program partners to support intentional activities and opportunities for our middle and high school youth and their families.
• Build relationships with staff at schools and other youth serving organizations to promote LCEC programs and build a network of resources for youth and program development.
• Guide the creation and maintenance of a positive, enriching environment for middle and high school youth within our program spaces.
• Collaborate with the LCEC fund development team to capture photos and quotes from youth and families to help effectively tell our story.
• Facilitate youth identity/affinity groups in collaboration with community partners.
• Lead weekly Teen Programs planning meetings, collect daily attendance information, and assist with reporting.

Buffett Scholars Coordination and Administration

• Manage the recruitment and selection process for Jane Burrows Buffett Scholars.
• Coordinate the Teen Programs team to provide regular mentoring, tutoring, advisory check-ins, and enrichment opportunities for scholars.
• Recruit, retain and supervise volunteers and interns to work with scholars as needed.
• Cultivate relationships with schools and colleges such as UW-Madison, Edgewood College, and Madison College to identify and create career and higher education opportunities for Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs participants.
• Plan and facilitate quarterly service learning projects and family gathering events.
• Monitor Buffett Scholars’ yearly award spending and ensure proper documentation.
• With scholars and LCEC Development team, take quality photos, share impactful stories, and celebrate successes with the Buffett Scholars community, including grant funders.
• Create a yearly survey for our Buffett Scholars to measure and evaluate the impact of the program as well as any barriers our Scholars are facing.

Youth Action Summer Internship Coordination and Administration (YASI)

• Manage the recruitment and selection process for the YASI program.
• In collaboration with the High School Lead Teacher create and facilitate a robust summer program with a focus on youth leadership, organizing, and life skill development.
• Coordinate with outside partners to strengthen educational and life-skill based opportunities for YASI participants.
• Ensure that all YASI participants are given MMSD school credit for participation and coordinate with the Director of Youth Programs to determine alternative YASI compensation.
• Plan and lead our annual YASI delegation trip.

Connection with Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School and Vel Phillips Memorial High School

• Connect with Vel Phillips Memorial High School to identify opportunities during the school day (tutoring, classroom support, lunch clubs, etc.) for ten hours/week of direct school day support.
• Collaborate intentionally with Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) staff to provide a wide array of out of school time clubs and opportunities for middle school youth.
• Meet regularly with Ezekiel Gillespie and Memorial High School staff (i.e. school principal, social worker, bi-lingual resource specialists, MSCR, etc.) to partner around support of high and middle school youth and identify opportunities for connection and collaboration.
• Monitor and track attendance and homework completion through Infinite Campus to ensure that LCEC high and middle school youth are in good academic standing.
• Attend and support LCEC youth and families in attending family engagement events at Ezekiel Gillespie and Memorial HS (back to school night, fall festival, science night, etc.)

Center and Staffing Support

• Support the intentional integration of the Lussier Framework into all aspects of the LCEC’s work.
• Work with LCEC staff to support center-wide staff meetings, monthly community dinners and other center-wide events including annual staff evaluation and goal setting.
• Collaborates with the LCEC Directors’ team to identify and organize regular professional development opportunities for the Teen Programs team.
• Engage purposefully with LCEC interns, volunteers, and community members.
• Supervises the Middle School Coordinator and High School/Middle School Lead Teachers.

Participate fully in shared work of the LCEC, including neighborhood events, staff retreats/meetings, and other projects as they arise.

The Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager will perform all other duties and/or tasks at the discretion of the Director of Youth Programs as necessary for the successful operation of the LCEC.
