Job summary

The Budget Analyst position with the City of Tucson’s Business Services Department supports the planning, monitoring, and analysis of the city’s budgets. You will prepare financial reports, analyze data, and provide insights to guide informed decisions in a municipal setting.

Under the Budget Manager, you will assist with forecasts, budget memorandums, and adherence to guidelines while supporting users of budgeting platforms and stakeholders across departments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with at least 2 years of budget experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing overall budgets and analyze department budgets; compile and analyze statistical and fiscal data for schedules and summaries.
  • Review budget transfer requests and amendments; evaluate and respond to budget requests; research economic influences on revenues and expenditures.
  • Assist with producing short-, mid-, and long-term forecasts using historical data and trends to project financial performance.
  • Draft budget memorandums, reports and presentations; maintain files and documents; help departments adhere to budget guidelines.
  • Support budget monitoring and forecasting activities, including cost-benefit, variance, and scenario analyses.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Position Specific Summary

The Budget Analyst position at the City of Tucson's Business Services Department is responsible for assisting in the preparation and monitoring of budgets, ensuring that expenditures align with financial goals and constraints. This position involves analyzing financial data, preparing reports, and providing insights to support effective decision-making.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Budget Manager. This position does not supervise.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the preparation of overall budgets, makes recommendations by researching, documenting, and reviewing department budgets. Compiles and analyzes both statistical and fiscal data as the basis for preparing specific schedules, tables, and summaries.
  • Reviews and processes budget transfer requests and budget amendments while evaluating and responding to budget requests. Assists in researching economic influences in the City's revenues and expenditures. Provides support to budgeting platform users, including finance staff and City stakeholders.
  • Assists with producing short-term, mid-term, and long-term forecasts. Uses historical data, trends, and other factors to forecast future financial performance and budget requirements.
  • Drafts budget memorandums, reports, and presentations for review. Maintains files and documents. Assists departments in understanding and adhering to budget guidelines.
  • Supports budget monitoring and forecasting activities, such as cost-benefit analysis, variance analysis, and scenario analysis.
  • All other duties as assigned
Working Conditions

Mostly office environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education Bachelor's degree
  • Experience Two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalency Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • License/Certifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or related Discipline
  • Experience with budgets in a government or municipal setting.

Compensation Grade
