Job Title: Diesel Technician - Bucket Truck Technician

Location: Carol Stream Illinois

Company: Interstate Power Systems

Pay Range: $25.00-$40.00 DOE



A Bucket Truck Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing bucket trucks (aerial lift trucks) used in industries like telecommunications, electrical utilities, tree care, or construction. This role involves ensuring the safe and efficient operation of aerial lift equipment, conducting inspections, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and adhering to safety regulations.


Job Overview:


The bucket truck technician is responsible for the inspection, repair, and maintenance of bucket trucks. This includes diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and ensuring all safety standards are met. The role involves working both in a shop setting and in the field to keep bucket trucks in optimal working condition.



Key Responsibilities:



  • Inspection & Diagnosis:

    • Conduct routine inspections of bucket trucks to ensure all systems (hydraulic, electrical, mechanical) are functioning properly.

    • Identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical issues or faults.



  • Maintenance & Repair:

    • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake checks, and fluid inspections.

    • Repair or replace faulty components, including hydraulic systems, boom arms, electrical wiring, and safety features.

    • Maintain the bucket lift mechanism to ensure it operates smoothly and safely.



  • Hydraulic System Maintenance:

    • Inspect and repair hydraulic components (hoses, pumps, valves) of the lift and boom systems.

    • Diagnose and resolve issues related to fluid pressure, leaks, and system performance.



  • Electrical Troubleshooting:

    • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including wiring, control panels, and sensors.

    • Address any issues with power supply, lighting, or electrical systems that could impact the operation of the truck or lift.



  • Safety Compliance:

    • Ensure the truck complies with all safety standards and regulations (OSHA, DOT, etc.).

    • Perform regular safety checks on the boom arm, lifting equipment, and other components that impact operator safety.



  • Documentation & Reporting:

    • Maintain detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.

    • Complete work orders and reports for each service completed.



  • Field Service:

    • Provide on-site repair services for bucket trucks in the field when necessary.

    • Troubleshoot and resolve issues on location to minimize downtime for the operators.





Skills & Qualifications:



  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Proficient in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic and mechanical systems.

    • Strong understanding of electrical systems, including wiring, motors, and sensors.



  • Experience:

    • Previous experience working with bucket trucks, cranes, or other aerial work platforms is preferred.

    • Experience in the automotive or heavy equipment industry is an asset.



  • Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift heavy equipment, tools, and parts.

    • Comfortable working at heights and in elevated positions.



  • Safety-Conscious:

    • Strong knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to perform work in compliance with OSHA and other relevant regulations.



  • Problem-Solving:

    • Ability to quickly identify and solve complex technical issues.



  • Certification (Optional but Preferred):

    • Certification for working at heights or aerial lifts (e.g., Aerial Work Platform certification).

    • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) or other relevant certifications are a plus.





Work Environment:



  • Bucket truck technicians may work in a variety of environments, including indoor workshops, outdoor job sites, and even during inclement weather.

  • The role may require the technician to work at heights, sometimes in precarious positions.

  • Standard work hours, but some on-call or overtime work may be required based on the needs of the business.
